Gwangju V-Day will hold a volleyball tournament followed by performances of “The Vagina Monologues” to raise funds for vulnerable women.

The monologues this year will include performances in English, Korean and Tagalog to reach a broader audience, director Leigh Hellman-Kang said.

V-Day is an annual season of events that raises money for women’s charities and raises awareness of issues surrounding sexual violence. Last year’s Gwangju V-Day raised 2.4 million won ($2,200) for four local women’s shelters, and Maria Lisak, one of the V-Day organizers, expects this year’s figure to be higher, as the figures raised from bake sales, art workshops and other events has already reached 1.8 million won.

The V-Day Volleyball tournament will run at Gwangju Foreign School on Saturday from 9:30 a.m.

“The volleyball idea emerged from Amy Badenhorst, one of the actresses,” explained Lisak. “She was very focused to try to have a fundraiser that focused on health and not the drinking scene.”

Three shows are scheduled to be performed, on April 27 at 3 p.m., 8 p.m. and on April 28 at 3 p.m. Tickets are 8,000 won in advance and 10,000 won at the door. Contact joseph.nunez87@gmail.com or visit http://www.gwangjutheatre.com for more information.
