South Korean LPGA Tour star Park In-bee is the new world No. 1 in women's golf.

Park moved up a spot to supplant Stacy Lewis of the U.S. as the top player in the latest women's rankings announced early Tuesday, Korean time. Park has an average of 9.28 ranking points, just 0.04 points ahead of Lewis, who had been No. 1 for the four previous weeks.

Park, 24, is the second South Korean, after Shin Ji-yai in 2010, and the eighth player overall to reach No. 1 since the rankings were introduced in 2006.

Park has won twice this season, mostly recently at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, the year's first major, on April 7. In 2012, Park led the LPGA Tour in money and in scoring average.

Park played 72 tournaments between her first LPGA Tour win, the 2008 U.S. Women's Open in June 2008, and her second victory, the 2012 Evian Masters in July last year. Since then, Park has won three times in 15 starts with six top-three finishes and more than $2.2 million in earnings.

"This is a very big day in my golf career," Park was quoted as saying on the LPGA Tour's official Web site. She is currently in Hawaii in preparation for the LPGA Lotte Championship this week.

"It's nice to reach this goal, but I know a lot of players are close to No. 1," Park said. "It gives me something else to play for every week and I know it's going to be a lot of fun."

In the world rankings, players earn points from tournaments over a rolling 104-week period, and points are weighted more heavily for the most recent 13 weeks. The LPGA Tour didn't have a tournament last weekend, but Park was still able to take over as No. 1 because rankings are calculated even during LPGA offweeks.

So far in 2013, Park is second behind Lewis on the money list with $567,129.

The rest of the world rankings didn't change from the previous week. Yani Tseng of Taiwan, who had been No. 1 for 109 weeks before Lewis replaced her, remained at No. 3, followed by two South Koreans, Choi Na-yeon at No. 4 and Ryu So-yeon at No. 5.

Shin Ji-yai, who spent a total of 26 weeks at No. 1 in 2010, stayed at No. 7 in the latest rankings. (Yonhap News)
