North Korea imported an unusually massive amount of silver from China in January, possibly in relation to leader Kim Jong-un's birthday that month, sources and China's customs office said Thursday.

Data from China's customs office showed that North Korea imported 661.71 kilograms of Chinese silver for $653,128 in January.

The monthly import is unusually enormous given that the North took in only $77,593 worth of precious metal and other jewels for the whole of 2012. The corresponding amount for 2011 was $57,000.

Before January this year, the North had hardly spent more than $10,000 on monthly imports of such goods, according to the data. 

Given the leader's birthday on Jan. 8, North Korea watchers said the massive amount of imported silver may have been used to produce silverware souvenirs to celebrate the leader's birthday.

"It's difficult to assume the exact purpose of the silver imports," a source said. Given that late leader Kim Jong-il used to bring in foreign brand luxury sedans and expensive watches to treat the country's top echelon on major holidays, the bulk of silver imported in January may have been used for similar purposes, the source said.

Backing this assumption, the customs data also showed that the North imported an unusually large amount of costume jewelry worth $10,447 in the same month.

Another source said the country seems to have been in urgent need of an extraordinary amount of silver that month given that it has abundant silver reserves. (Yonhap News)

북한이 지난 1월 이례적으로 중국으로부터 막대한 양의 은(銀)을 사들인 것으로 확인됐다.

28일 중국 해관(세관)에 따르면 북한은 1월 중국으로부터 661.71㎏의 은을 수입했다. 여기에는 65만3천128 달러(약 7억2천600만원)가 투입됐다.

한국 시중에서 1㎏짜리 은괴가 약 130만원에 팔리는 점을 고려하면 북한이 대량 구매를 통해 비교적 싼 값에 은을 사들였다고 할 수도 있다.

북한이 은과 같은 귀금속류를 대량 수입한 것은 좀처럼 전례를 찾아보기 어렵다.

북한은 2011년과 2012년 중국으로부터 귀금속류와 보석류(HS 코드 71)를 각각 5만7천 달러, 7만7천593 달러어치 사들였다.

은을 사들이는 데만 과거 2년간 북한이 중국에서 수입한 귀금속•보석류 전체 수입액의 5배에 달하는 거액을 썼다는 계산이 나온다.

2011년 이후 통계를 보면 북한이 귀금속류와 보석류로 분류되는 물품을 중국에서 수입하는 데 한 달에 1만 달러 이상을 쓴 적이 거의 없다.

게다가 풍부한 각종 지하자원을 가진 북한은 전국 각지에 다량의 은광, 금광을 갖고 있다는 점에서 귀중한 외화를 써가면서 대량의 은을 수입한 점이 눈길을 끌 만 하다.

은 수입 이유를 놓고는 추론이 분분하다.

일각에서는 지난 1월 김정은 북한 국방위원회 제1위원장의 생일과 연관짓기도 한다.

김 제1위원장이 부친 김정일 국방위원장으로부터 권력을 승계하고 생일을 처음 맞게 되자 핵심 간부층에 은으로 된 기념품을 만들어 다량 배포한 게 아니냐는 추정이다.

한 대북 소식통은 "은 수입의 구체적 목적은 추정하기 어렵지만 과거 김정일 국 방위원장이 주요 기념일에 고가 외제 시계와 자동차 등을 측근들에게 나눠줬던 점을 고려하면 김 제1위원장도 비슷한 행보에 나섰을 수 있다"고 말했다.

은(銀)이 김 제1위원장의 이름의 은(恩)과 비록 한자는 다르지만 발음이 같다는 점에서 김 제1위원장의 생일 경축용 선물로 쓰였을 수 있다는 지적이다.

북한이 같은 달 역시 이례적으로 귀금속과 보석이 들어가지 않은 반지, 목걸이, 팔찌, 귀고리 등 물품을 1만447 달러 어치 사들인 것도 이 같은 관측을 뒷받침하는 요소가 되고 있다.

북한이 2011년 이후 여성용 액세서리류를 수입하려고 이처럼 큰 금액을 쓴 적은 없다.

다른 소식통도 "북한이 자체적으로 생산하는 은을 갖고 있을 텐데도 대량으로 은을 수입했다는 건 상당히 흥미로운 점"이라며 "자체 비축분으로 쓸 수 없을 만큼 대량의 은이 급하게 필요했던 사정이 있었던 것 같다"고 말했다.
