The police said Tuesday that they are investigating a man believed to be an official from the National Intelligence Service (NIS) on suspicions of posting articles on Internet sites in an attempt to influence the outcome of last year's presidential election.

The 39-year-old man, identified only by his surname Lee, allegedly used nearly 40 different accounts to post around 160 articles that either supported or opposed certain candidates in the December presidential election, according to the police.

"We have yet to receive an official confirmation from the NIS, but various circumstances that have been identified during our investigation suggest that he is in fact a NIS official," a police official said.

The police had been investigating a 29-year-old woman, who has been confirmed an NIS official, on suspicions of writing some 120 online posts on politically sensitive issues ahead of last year's presidential election.

The NIS has denied the allegations of online political activities by its officials, claiming the woman, surnamed Kim, was only doing her job as an expert in psychological warfare against North Korea. (Yonhap News)

국정원男, 대선개입의혹 수사 중

국가정보원 여직원 김모(29)씨의 '대선개입  의혹'을 수사 중인 경찰이 국정원 직원으로 추정되는 남성 피의자도 수사 중인 것으로

확인됐다.

이번 피의자도 현직 국정원 직원으로 확인될 경우 국정원이 인터넷상에서  조직적으로 정치적인 활동을 했다는 의혹이 짙어질 것으로 보인다.

서울 수서경찰서는 '오늘의 유머' 사이트에 정치적으로 민감한 이슈와 관련한 글을 올린 혐의(국가정보원법 위반)로 이모(39)씨를 불구속 입건했다고 26일 밝혔다.

경찰 관계자는 "국정원에 공식적으로 확인한 것은 아니지만 수사 과정에서 드러난 정황상 이씨가 국정원 직원이 맞는 것으로 본다"고 밝혔다.

경찰은 이미 피의자 신분으로 수사 중인 국정원 여직원 김씨와 일반인 이모(42)씨가 글을 작성한 '오늘의 유머' 사이트의 IP 접속기록과 글을 분석하는 과정에서 이씨도 같은 사이트에서 활동한 사실을 발견했다.

경찰은 국정원 직원으로 추정되는 이씨가 사용한 아이디나 작성한 글의 내용과 개수 등에 대해서는 "김씨와 비슷한 내용의 글을 올렸다"며 "구체적인 내용은  수사가 더 진행돼야 한다"고만 밝혔다.

경찰은 이씨를 출국 금지했으며 앞으로 소환 일정을 조율해 정확한 신분과 댓글작성 경위 등을 조사할 계획이다.

경찰은 지난달 김씨로부터 '오늘의 유머' 사이트 아이디 5개를 넘겨받아 정치적으로 민감한 이슈와 관련한 글을 작성하고 자신의 명의까지 건네며 김씨를 도운  혐의로 일반인 이모(42)씨를 소환 조사했다.

'오늘의 유머' 사이트 운영자 이호철(41)씨는 일반인 이씨가 넘겨받은 아이디 5개 외에 33개의 아이디를 '제4의 인물'과 공유해 대선과 관련된 글 160여 건을 올린 흔적이 발견됐다고 밝혔다.

경찰은 국정원 직원으로 추정되는 이씨가 이들 아이디 일부를 넘겨받아 글을 작성했을 가능성을 배제하지 않고 수사를 진행하고 있다. (연합뉴스)
