인권운동가 고은태 교수, 성희롱 파문 휩싸여

유명한 인권 운동가가 20대 여성을 성추문한 사실이 들어나 파문이 일고 있다.

지난 20일 한 여성은 트위터를 통해 대학 교수이자 유명 인권운동가인 고은태로부터 성추행을 당했다고 폭로했다.

그녀는 고은태가 술을 마시고 카톡을 한 적이 여러번 있었으며 ‘특정 부위의 벗은 사진을 보내라,’ ‘오른쪽 세번째 발가락에 키스하고 싶다’ 등의 발언으로 오랜 시간 고통받았다고 본인의 트위터 계정을 통해 밝혔다.

이 글을 본 고은태는 21일 사과문을 본인 트위터 계정에 올렸다. 그는 “그분과 저 사이에 도덕적으로 옳지 못한 카톡 대화가 있었음을 인정합니다”라고 언급하며 앞으로 자숙의 시간을 가지며 부도덕한 처신에 대해 반성하겠습니다 라고 전했다. 현재 그의 트위터계정은 ‘계폭’ (계정을 지우는 행위) 상태다.

두 사람은 지난해 9월 트위터를 통해 알게 됐고 고 교수가 발제자로 참여한 한 정당토론회에서 만나 전화번호를 교환했다고 알려졌다. 그후 모바일 채팅애플리케이션인 카카오톡으로 일주일 가량 문자메세지를 주고받는 과정에서 문제의 이야기 내용이 전달되었다.

고은태는 서울대학교를 졸업하고 현재 중부대학교 교수직을 맡고 있으며 국제 인권운동단체인 국제앰네스티 한국지부 이사장을 역임한 바 있다. 한편 국제앰네스티 한국지부는 “한국지부 이사회는 이 사건과 관련된 사항을 확인한 후 정관과 규정에 따라 징계 등의 필요한 조치를 신속하게 처리할 예정”이라고 중징계 방침을 밝혔다. (박수희 인턴기자 / 코리아헤럴드)

Goh Eun-tae deletes Twitter after victim reveals his inappropriate mobile messages

A renowned human rights activist was found to have committed sexual harassment against a young woman, sending shockwaves through local social networks.

Goh Eun-tae, professor of Chungbu University and member of Amnesty International’s executive committee, allegedly sent the woman several inappropriate texts through a mobile messenger application “Kakao Talk,” according to the victim’s Twitter posts.

The 27-year-old woman claimed that Goh had sent sexual messages including “Send me nude parts of your body” and “I want to kiss the third toe on your right foot.”

Shortly after the woman’s posts went viral on Twitter, Goh issued a formal apology on his Twitter account and admitted that he sent such messages. Goh said he “will have time for self-reflection” and then deleted his Twitter account which had about 40,000 followers.

The two have known each other since September last year and shared contacts in a forum where Goh gave a speech about human rights. The problematic mobile exchange lasted for a week.

The 50-year-old professor graduated from Seoul National University and served as chairman of the Korean chapter of Amnesty International. The human rights organization is considering punitive measures against him, including permanent expulsion from the organization. (suipark@heraldcorp.com)
