Indonesian scientists are closely monitoring a smoking volcano popular with tourists on Java island and are urging everyone to stay off the mountain‘s slope.

Government volcanologist Hendra Gunawan said Thursday that Mount Tangkuban Perahu in West Java province has spewed smoke and ash nearly 500 meters (1,640 feet) into the air since Monday. Scientists have put it on the second-highest alert level.

Debris and lava have not tumbled far, and nearby towns and villages remain safe. Authorities are warning tourists to stay at least 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) away from the crater because of the poisonous gas inside.

The 2,084-meter (6,837-foot) volcano is among Java’s most popular tourist attractions. It last erupted in 1983. Visitors ordinarily can hike to the crater‘s edge to view boiling mud up close.(AP)

인도네시아 과학자들은 관광객들에게 유명한 자바지역의 활화산을 연구 중이며 관광객들로 하여금 화산으로부터 피할 것을 촉구했다.

정부 산하 연구기관의 화산학자인 헨드라 구나완 박사는 목요일 서부 자바지방에 있는 탕쿠반 페라후 산이 월요일부터 500미터 떨어진 지역의 대기 상에 연기와 재를 분출하고 있다고 경고했다. 과학자들은 2단계 경보를 내렸다.

재화산재와 용암이 멀리 떨어지지는 않아서, 주변 시내와 마을은 안전한 상태이다. 인도네시아 당국은 관광객들에게 독성가스가 있는 분화구에서 적어도 1.5km는 떨어져 있을 것을 당부했다.
