GENEVA (Yonhap News) ― Ssangyong Motor Co., South Korea’s smallest automaker, will be able to export 36,000 vehicles to Russia this year as it seeks to boost its sales at home and abroad, the company head said Tuesday.

Lee Yoo-il, Ssangyong’s chief executive officer, told reporters at the Geneva International Motor Show that his company will export disassembled kits of parts and components to be reassembled into vehicles in the Russian Far Eastern city of Vladivostok.

Russian workers will assemble the kits into vehicles at a plant run by Sollers, a Russian carmaker that works in partnership with Ssangyong, as the Korean carmaker does not have its own assembly plant in Russia.

The carmaker said the export of disassembled kits is designed to avoid the 30 percent import duties Russia imposes on fully built imported vehicles. Russia slaps no duties on Ssangyong’s disassembled kits on condition that the carmaker will eventually ship complete knockdown kits of parts and components to Russia.

Ssangyong Motor sold 32,328 units in Russia last year. It was the first time the company’s sales in a single country have surpassed 30,000 units.

He also said it is necessary for Ssangyong Motor to make inroads into the U.S. market in the long-term, though he did not provide any specific time frame.
