Koreans in Seoul and New York are set to hold various events Friday to mark the March 1 Independence Movement.

March 1 is a national holiday in Korea which commemorates the independence movement against the Japanese colonial occupation in 1919. The nationwide uprising is one of the most significant protests against Japan’s colonization of Korea, which ended in 1945 at the end of World War II.

Seodaemun Prison History Hall will host a “3.1 experience program,” incorporating the core ideology of the independence movement into history and cultural arts on March 1 starting from 11 a.m.

A reenactment of the anti-colonial marches and mime performances will be held followed by a chorus of children singing military songs and a recital of the Declaration of Independence.

The first 300 people to arrive will be able to participate in the recreated marches of the independence movement at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. All participants will be given a Korean flag.

An event commemorating the independence movement will also be held in New York City hosted by three New York University students and Seo Kyung-deok, a PR expert well known for campaigning in support of Korea’s ownership of the Dokdo Islets.

The ceremony will hold a samulnori performance, Korean traditional percussion music, explain the objectives of the independence movement and reenact its key scenes.

The event is open to the public and will start at 2:30 p.m. on March 1 at Central Park.

3ㆍ1운동 94돌을 맞아 국내외에서 다양한 체험행사가 열린다.

서울 서대문구(구청장 문석진)는 서대문형무소역사관에서 다음달 1일 오전 11시부터 독립운동 정신과 이념을 현대 역사ㆍ문화예술로 승화시키는 ‘3ㆍ1절 체험행사’를 개최한다고 28일 밝혔다

이번 체험은 형무소 옥사에서 독립만세를 외치며 항일투쟁을 하는 퍼포먼스와 마임공연으로 시작해 독립문까지 거리행진을 진행한다. 또 역사어린이 합창단의 독립군가 노래 공연, 33인 독립선언서 낭독이 이어진다.

메인무대에서 독립관을 지나 독립문까지 이어지는 독립만세 행진은 오전 11시 30분과 오후 1시 30분, 오후 3시 30분 총 3회 잔디광장에서 진행되며, 회당 330명 선착순으로 누구나 참여할 수 있다. 행사 참여자에게는 태극기가 제공된다.

3ㆍ1절을 맞이하여 미국 뉴욕 한복판에서도 한국홍보전문가 서경덕 교수와 뉴욕대생 3명도 3.1절을 맞아 뉴욕 센트럴파크에서 만세운동을 주도한다.

행사는 2시 30분에 사물놀이 공연으로 시작해 3.1운동의 취지 설명 및 만세운동을 재현한다. (코리아헤럴드)
