A group of Japanese wives of Korean men urged Japan on Thursday to apologize for Korean women’s sex slavery during the World War Ⅱ.

The civic group “Overcoming Korea and Japan’s History and Making a Better Relationship between the Two Countries” issued a statement in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province demanding Japan’s apology on the “comfort women” issue. The term “comfort women” refers to sex slaves under the Japanese military during World War II.

“Only the victims would understand how painful it was. All we can do is to apologize. With the March 1 Independence Movement Day ahead, we wish that the relationship between Korea and Japan could develop,” said the group’s leader Miyajaki Sayoko.

한국으로 시집온 일본 여성들 모임인 ‘한일 역사를 극복하고 우호를 추진하는 모임’ 충북지부 회원 50여명이 광복절을 하루 앞둔 28일 오전 청주시 상당구 중앙공원에서 위안부 문제에 대한 일본의 사과를 촉구하는 호소문을 발표했다.

이 자리에서 미야자키 사요꼬(59) 충북지부 회장은 “피해 당사자밖에 모르는 그 고통에 대해 우리가 할 수 있는 것은 사죄뿐”이라며 “3·1절을 맞아 한·일의 참된 우호 관계에 조금이라도 도움이 되고 싶어 이렇게 사과의 뜻을 전하기로 했다”고 밝혔다.

이들은 이미 지난해 8월 14일과 17일 두차례에 걸쳐 청주 성안길 용두사지 철당간 광장에서 종군 위안부 문제에 대한 일본의 사과를 촉구하는 호소문을 발표했다. (연합뉴스)
