A masculine woman or a feminine man may not be such an exception, a study suggested, citing the greater-than-expected volume of character traits shared by men and women.

Men, for example, can be as care-giving, empathetic and self-sacrificing as women. Likewise, women can be talented in science or math, think logically, and value looks when finding a mate -- traits traditionally associated with men.
The study analyzed the data of 122 behavioral and personality factors from 13,301 participants who were previously engaged in gender-difference studies. It was published in the latest issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

“The data that we used was collected years ago, when gender roles were not as fluid as they are today. That strengthens the argument for a gender continuum, because gender differences show up as flexible even when gender stereotypes were stronger,” said Bobbi Carothers, a researcher from the University of Rochester.

The data also showed that each gender’s masculine and feminine traits were equally revealed. Namely, muscular men can have talent in cooking and feminine women can have a positive view on casual sex.
