A special police team will be launched later this month to handle sex crimes committed against social minorities.

According to the police, the team will recruit 130 additional police officers with experience in investigating juvenile delinquency and women-related crimes. The newly expanded team is set to operate from Feb. 27.

Police said that 208 police officers at 16 local police headquarters across the nation will be in charge of investigating crimes against social minorities including the physically disabled and children beaten at school and home.

The special team will also track down criminals charged of sexual assault and rape, who have not yet registered their personal information with the authorities. There are currently 5,387 people who have not submitted their personal information including their address, job and vehicle registration numbers.

Police said it will run the special team 24 hours a day throughout the year in order to eradicate sex crimes against social minorities.

아동과 장애인 등 사회적 약자를 대상으로 저질러지는 성폭력 범죄를 전담하는 경찰 수사대가 이달 말부터 365일 24시간 상시 운영 된다.

18일 경찰청에 따르면 기존 아동•청소년 성폭력 사건 전담팀인 ‘1319팀’을 확대 개편한 성폭력특별수사대가 이달 27일 출범한다.

전국 16개 지방경찰청에 총원 208명으로 편제되는 성폭력특별수사대는 아동•장애인 등 사회적 약자 대상의 성폭력 사건, 경찰서 권역을 넘나드는 중요 성폭력•학교폭력•가정폭력 사건 수사를 전담한다.

성폭력특별수사대는 장기간 소재가 파악되지 않은 신상정보 등록대상자를 추적하는 역할도 함께 수행한다. 신상정보 등록 대상자는 강간, 강제추행 등 성범죄를 저지르고 법원에서 유죄판결을 받은 전과자 5천387명이다. 이들은 주소와 실 거주지, 직업 및 소재지, 차량번호 등 정보를 당국에 등록하고 변경 시에는 30일 이내에 신고해야 할 의무가 있지만 현재 54명이 소재 불명 상태다.

경찰은 성폭력특별수사대에 365일 24시간 순환 교대근무 체제를 구축해 사회적 약자 대상의 성폭력 사건에 실시간으로 대응할 수 있도록 할 방침이다.

경찰청 관계자는 “특히 아동과 장애인, 여성 등 사회적 약자 대상의 범죄를 끝까지 추적해 법의 심판을 받도록 할 것”이라고 말했다. (코리아헤럴드)
