A woman in her 80s who was forced into labor for imperial Japan during World War II is set to receive a diploma from her elementary school 70 years after her graduation in Hwasun, South Jeolla Province.

According to a civic group dealing with Japan’s recruitment of people for forced labor, Neungju elementary school made the decision to give a graduation certificate to Kim Jae-rim, 83, at a graduation ceremony on Feb. 19.

Kim was one of the 300 girls from the Jeolla and Chungcheong provinces who were drafted to work for Mitsubishi Heavy Industry in May 1944. After enduring harsh work in an aviation manufacturing company located in Nagoya, they came back to Korea at the time of Korea’s independence.

“I was told that I could study and earn money in Japan. A relative whom I was going to accompany did not show up that morning. Without leaving any message to my family, I, alone, left my home country.” said Kim, remembering the day she left for Japan.

Kim expressed her joy at the news. She had not remembered if she graduated or not but a school document recently confirmed that she did in March 1944.

The civic group is collecting stories of victims who could not finish school due to the forced labor.

근로정신대 할머니,  "70년만의 졸업장"

일제 강점기 근로정신대에 강제동원된 피해 할머니가 70여 년 만에 초등학교 졸업장을 받는다.

18일 ‘근로정신대 할머니와 함께하는 시민모임’에 따르면 화순 능주초등학교는 19일 ‘제100회 졸업식’에서 졸업생인 김재림(83)할머니에게 졸업장을 재발급해 수여할 예정이다.

김 할머니는 “일본에 가면 돈도 벌고 공부할 수 있다”는 친척 언니의 말을 믿고 1944년 5월께 일본행에 나섰다.

그러나 “함께 가자”던 언니는 일본으로 떠나기로 한 날 기차역에 나타나지 않았고 김 할머니는 군수업체 미쓰비시중공업이 운영하는 나고야 항공기 제작소까지 끌려가 어린 나이에 허기에 지친 몸으로 혹독한 강제노역에 시달렸다.

또한 해방 후 고국에 돌아와서는 “일본군 위안부 아니었느냐”는 편견과 오인 속에 남모를 정신적 고통까지 겪었다.

자신이 학교를 졸업했는지 기억하지 못하는 할머니의 사연을 접한 시민모임은 지난달 11일 사실 확인차 김 할머니와 함께 모교인 능주초등학교를 방문했다.

학교 측과 시민모임 관계자들은 이날 문서고에 있는 일제시대 학적부를 뒤지다가 1944년 3월 31회 졸업생 명단에서 창씨개명 된 김 할머니의 이름을 확인했다.

능주초등학교는 올해로 ‘100회’ 졸업생을 배출하는 뜻 깊은 해를 맞아 이번 졸업식에서 할머니에게 졸업장을 재발급해 수여함으로써 할머니의 고단한 삶에 위로와 용기를 전하기로 했다.

졸업장을 다시 받게 된 김 할머니는 “고향 역을 지나갈 때 어머니한테 말씀도 제대로 못 드리고 간다고 생각하니 눈물이 나더라”며 “오늘같이 기쁜 날이 없다. 해방 68년 만에 졸업식에 다시 선다고 하니 새 신부처럼 가슴이 두근거리고 설렌다”고 말했다.
