A 33-year-old Korean man was arrested on charge of attempting to rape an American woman, Gwangjin District police said Tuesday.

The suspect allegedly broke into the 28-year-old victim’s apartment in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, at 3:00 a.m. on Jan. 12, and tried to rape her while she was sleeping. The man inflicted a minor injury to her head while attacking her.

The suspect, who police said was drunk at the time, was thwarted after the victim put up a fight. The suspect then fell asleep while holding the victim.

The victim then fled her apartment and went to her friend, who then called the police. The suspect had already fled the scene by the time police arrived.

Police obtained DNA evidence by examining his pants and underwear that were left at the crime scene. Police said that the rape attempt was likely carried out by one of the victim’s neighbors and came to identify the suspect by using the DNA data.

Police said the suspect found that the victim’s apartment door was unlocked and went in to assault her.

The man denied the assault, saying that he had no recollection of the entire incident, police said.

미국인 여성 성폭행 미수한 30대男 구속

한 미국인 여성의 집에 침입해 성폭행하려고 한 30대 남성이 경찰에 붙잡혔다.

서울 광진 경찰서는 12일 한국에 체류중인 미국인 K씨 (28)을 성폭행하려고 한 혐의로 A씨(33)을 구속했다고 밝혔다.

경찰에 따르면 용의자는 지난달 12일 새벽 3시에 피해자의 주택에 들어가 자고 있는 피해자를 성폭행하려고 한 혐의를 받고 있다. 당시 용의자는 술에 취한 상태였으며 피해자는 이에 저항하는 과정에서 얼굴 등에 폭행을 당했다고 한다.

용의자는 성폭행이 실패하자 그 자리에서 잠이 들었고, 피해자는 이 틈을 타 집안에서 빠져 나와 친구가 운영하는 술집으로 피신했다. 피해자 친구의 신고를 받고 출동한 경찰이 피해자의 집에 도착했을 때는 용의자는 이미 도주한 상태였다.

그러나 경찰은 용의자가 피해자 집에 벗어놓은 바지와 속옷에서 DNA 정보를 취득해 용의자를 검거하는데 성공했다.

경찰 조사 결과 용의자는 피해자와 같은 건물에 살고 있었으며 평상시에는강사 생활을 하던 이로 드러났다.

용의자는 이 사건에 대한 기억이 전혀 없다며 혐의를 부인하고 있다.
