Suwon City will provide a naming service for newborn babies who are socially disadvantaged.

The program aims to support people who are financially challenged, such as people living on minimum wage, the disabled, single mothers and North Korea refugees. Those who wish to sign up for the program should submit basic information, such as the baby’s birth date and parent’s name, to Suwon City by e-mail or mail.

Korean names comprised of three characters have different meanings. Many Koreans believe that these names have influence over people’s lives, such as wealth, health and job, paying “expert namers” to name their babies.

Adults who want their names changed may also register for the service.

Suwon City plans to open an advisory session every second Thursday, 2-6 p.m., for the public.

People will receive new names within 7 days of registration by email or mail.

"아기 이름을 지어드립니다" 

경기도 수원시는 7일 사회적 취약계층의 신생아를 위해 무료로 ‘예쁜 이름’을 지어주기로 했다.

대상은 기초생활보장 수급자, 장애우, 차상위계층, 미혼모, 다문화가정, 북한 이탈주민 등이다. 이름 짓기를 희망하는 민원인은 아기의 출생일자, 부모 이름, 항렬, 출생순위, 본인의 희망이름 등 아기에 대한 정보를 기록해 우편이나 이메일, 전화(031-228-2 131,1899-3300)로 신청하면 된다.

시는 신청서를 전문 작명가에게 보내 이름을 지은 뒤 우편이나 이메일 등으로 아기 이름과 작명 이유 등을 부모에게 전해 줄 예정이다.

시는 또 매월 둘째 주 목요일 오후 2∼6시 시청 종합민원실 행정종합정보센터에 상담창구를 개설, 전문 작명가와 이름에 대해 상담할 수 있도록 했다.

시 관계자는 “작명 신청 후 7일 정도면 이름을 받을 수 있다”며 “신생아 이름뿐 아니라 개명을 희망하는 사람에 대해서도 작명서비스를 한다”고 말했다. (코리아헤럴드)
