A Russian research team claimed that they have found the remains of a huge, mysterious creature in Lake Labynkyr in Siberia, perhaps finally proving the existence of the lake’s “Devil,” reported the Siberian Times.

The study was conducted by the Russian Geographical Society in coordination with divers from the Russian Emergencies Ministry and scientists from Yakutsk State University.

“There have been all sorts of hypotheses about what kind of creature it could be: a giant pike, a reptile or an amphibian,” said research team geologist Viktor Tverdokhlebov. “We didn’t manage to prove or to disprove these versions but we managed to find the remains of jaws and a skeleton of some animal.”

In a separate study that took place in 2012, scientists found sonar evidence of a large mass underwater.

“I can’t say we literally found and touched something unusual there, but we did register with our echo-sounding device several seriously big, underwater objects, bigger than a fish, bigger than even a group of fish,” said Ludmila Emeliyanova, professor of biogeography at Moscow State University.

Also, in 1953, a team of geologists reported seeing a creature in nearby Lake Vorota roughly the size of an orca.

However, the latest research team has yet to show any scientific evidence and critics said the environmental conditions there are not ideal for such a big creature.

모스크바주립대학교(Moscow State University) 지리생물학자인 루드밀라 에멜리야노바(Ludmila Emeliyanova)는 "뭔가를 직접 보고 만졌다고는 말할 수는 없지만 수심측정을 해본 결과 엄청나게 큰 물체가 있다는 것을 알아냈습니다. 단순히 물고기는 아닌 것 같습니다."라고 전했다.

1953년 해당 호수 근처의 다른 호수인 보로타 호수(Lake Vorota)에서 지리학자팀에 의해 거대한 고래로 보이는 생물체가 발견되었다는 기록이 있다.

그러나 연구팀은 아직 어떠한 증거물도 공개하지 않아 신빙성이 없다는 비판을 받고 있다. (코리아헤럴드)
