No matter how skilled or experienced motorcyclists are, they have far higher risk of being killed while riding than someone in a car, U.K. researchers say.

Jonathan J. Rolison of Queen’s University Belfast and Elizabeth Hellier of the University of Plymouth assessed whether policies designed to safeguard young motorcyclists would be effective given shifts toward high-powered motorcycles.

The researchers investigated population-wide motor vehicle driver and motorcyclist casualties, excluding passengers, recorded in Britain between 2002 and 2009. To adjust for exposure and measure individual risk, the researchers said they used the estimated number of trips of motorcyclists and drivers, which had been collected as part of a national travel survey.

The study, published in the American Journal of Public Health, found motorcyclists were 76 times more likely to be killed than were drivers for every trip. Older motorcyclist age -- with more experience, better skill sets and superior riding behavior -- did not abate the risks of high-powered motorcycles, the study said. (UPI)

오토바이 운전자, ‘위험천만’

영국 퀸즈대학교의 조너선 롤리슨과 플라이머스 대학교의 벨패스트, 엘리자베스 헬리어 부부는 최근 고출력 오토바이가 인기를 끌고 있는 가운데 어린 오토바이 운전자들을 보호하기 위해 시행되고 있는 정책들이 효과적인지의 여부를 측정했다.

연구진은 지난 2002년부터 2009년 사이에 발생한 교통사고들 가운데 보행자를 제외하고 운전자가 사망한 사건들을 조사했다.

연구 결과 오토바이 운전자들은 자동차 운전자들에 비해 무려 76배나 사망 확률이 높게 나타났다. 또한 경험과 실력이 더 나은 것으로 간주되어온 베테랑 오토바이 운전자들조차 고출력 오토바이의 위험성을 피해가지는 못하는 것으로 나타나 일반적인 예상과 대조를 이뤘다. (코리아헤럴드)
