New follow-up of action video game series “Grand Theft Auto,” which has provoked controversies over its violent and suggestive descriptions, will be globally released in September.

U.S.-based game developer Rockstar Games announced in an official statement on Friday that the release date of “GTA V” has been fixed to Sept. 17.

The title was previously scheduled to be launched early this year, but the developer later said that the game needs more time to complete.

“The company apologizes for those who have long waited the new ’GTA’ title,” Rockstar Games said. “We will present a better game to fulfill anticipations from game fans.”

The video game, rated over-18, features the main character committing crimes, wielding guns and escaping in stolen vehicles including motorbikes, police cars and even tanks.

Critics have long said that “GTA” series as a typical harmful video material that makes players to develop aggressive behavior, especially younger generations.

미국 게임개발사 락스타게임즈는 1일 신작 ‘GTA5’의 출시일이 올해 9월 17일로 확정됐다고 공식 발표했다.

GTA5는 본래 올 봄 출시될 예정이었으나 개발사 측에서 게임 완성도를 위해 시간이 더 필요하다고 밝히며 출시가 연기된 바 있다.

락스타게임즈는 “GTA시리즈 신작을 기다려 오신 분들께 연기소식을 전하게 돼 죄송하다”며 “기대에 부응하는 더 좋은 게임을 선사하겠다”고 밝혔다.

청소년이용불가 등급판정을 받은 이 게임은 주인공이 총을 쏘고 오토바이, 경찰차 등 차량을 탈취하는 등 범죄를 저지르는 내용이 주를 이룬다.

일부에서는 GTA시리즈야 말로 게임 이용자들, 특히 젊은 이용자들에게 공격적 성향을 띠게 만드는 전형적인 유해영상물이라고 비난해왔다. (코리아헤럴드)
