The suspect behind a 2007 case involving a missing couple committed suicide last year, police said Wednesday.

According to Busan police, the 42-year-old suspect supposedly linked to the disappearance of Choi Nak-yul and his wife Jo Yeong-suk was found dead in an apparent suicide in Geoje city, South Gyeongsang Province.

He was found on May 17, 2012, with a suicide note that said: “None of this would have happened if I kept my hands off the stocks.”

The unnamed man was considered a prime suspect by police after it learned that he faked an alibi using Choi’s cell phone. Police reopened the case last year and found that the suspect colluded with his friend to forge phone records to secure an alibi.

The suspect was a business partner with Choi and was the last person known to have contacted him.

“We found evidence that the suspect carefully manipulated the case. Given the circumstances, it is highly likely that the Choi couple is already dead,” a police official said. “The suspect seems to have been driven to kill himself after feeling the pressure of the police investigation closing in on him.”

The disappearance of 57-year-old Choi and his 52-year-old wife was one of the best-known cold cases in Busan.

Choi went missing after leaving home with his wife in April 2007. Police suspected foul play and conducted a sweeping investigation, but failed to find any clues.

‘최낙율’ 부부사건 유력 용의자 자살

부산의 대표적인 장기미제 사건인 ‘최낙율 부부실종사건’의 유력 용의자가 지난해 자살했다고 경찰이 23일 발표했다.

부산 사상경찰서와 부산경찰청이 밝힌 바에 따르면 용의자 A씨는 지난해 5월 17일 경남 거제시의 한 주차장에 있는 자신의 차량 앞에서 숨진 채 발견되었다고 한다. 그는 사망 당시 42세였다.

차량 안에는 “주식에만 손을 안댔다면 이런 일은 없었을 텐데…”라는 내용의 유서가 발견되었다.

A씨는 부산경찰청이 지난해 초 장기미제전담팀을 신설하고 미제사건들을 재수사하면서 유력한 용의자로 떠올랐다.

경찰은 재수사를 통해 A씨가 최씨 부부 실종 당일인 2007년 4월19일, 지인에게 최 씨의 휴대전화를 이용해 자신에게 전화를 한 뒤 최 씨의 휴대전화를 버리도록 했다는 A씨 지인의 진술을 받아냈다.

경찰은 “재수사 결과 A씨가 알리바이 등 사건을 치밀하게 조작한 정황과 증거가 드러났으며 여러가지 여건상 최씨 부부는 숨졌을 가능성이 매우 높다”라고 말했다.

경찰은 A씨가 점점 좁혀지는 수사망으로 인해 심리적 압박을 느껴 자살한 것으로 추정하고 있다.

최낙율 부부 실종 사건은 2007년 4월19일 일어났는데, 중소기업 사장인 최낙율(당시 57세)씨와 부인 조영숙(52)씨는 각각 집을 나간 뒤 소식이 끊겼다. 경찰은 단순실종, 범죄연루 등 여러 가능성을 염두에 두고 전면적인 수사를 진행했지만 결국 단서를 찾지 못했다. (코리아헤럴드)
