More than half of South Koreans think they belong to the low-income bracket, a poll showed Monday, apparently reflecting their falling earnings due to the country‘s protracted economic slump.

According to the nationwide survey of 1,000 people by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs, 50.5 percent said their earnings hover below the nation’s median income.

Another 36.9 percent responded they belong to the middle-income bracket, while only 10.5 percent believed themselves to be high-income earners, the poll showed.

According to the findings, South Koreans are most worried about preparing for life after retirement, followed by education, employment, healthcare, and household debts.

Nearly 29 percent of the respondents are dissatisfied with the welfare policies implemented by the incumbent Lee Myung-bak administration, while only 18.4 percent are satisfied.

Meanwhile, the respondents said President-elect Park Geun-hye, who will take office in late February, should make her top policy priorities creating more jobs, reducing medical costs, and offering financial aid and housing for the low-income bracket, according to the survey. (Yonhap News)

한국보건사회연구원이 국민 1천명을 대상으로 실시한 설문조사에서 50.5퍼센트가 자신이 ‘중산층 이하’의 경제계층에 속한다고 응답했다.

이어 36.9퍼센트가 자신을 중산층에 속한다고 응답한 반면, 10.5퍼센트만이 자신을 고소득층으로 분류한 것으로 나타났다.

설문조사 결과에 따르면 한국인들은 은퇴 후의 삶에 대해 가장 크게 걱정하는 것으로 나타났으며 교육, 취업, 보건, 가계부채 등이 그 뒤를 이었다.

전체 응답자의 29퍼센트 가량이 이명박 정부가 실시한 복지 정책에 불만족 하고 있는 것으로 나타났으며 18.4퍼센트만이 만족한다고 응답했다.

한편 응답자들은 박근혜 대통령 당선자가 취임 후 일자리 창출, 의료보험부담 축소, 저소득층에 대한 금융 및 주택지원 강화 등을 최우선 당면과제로 삼아야 한다고 응답했다. (코리아헤럴드)
