Hollywood icon Natalie Wood may have suffered non-accidental injuries before her 1981 drowning death and ended up in the sea in a “non-volitional” manner, a new coroner‘s report said Monday.

The report, compiled by the LA County Coroner’s Office after the case was re-opened in 2011, raises fresh questions about her death and the role of her actor husband Robert Wagner and a fellow actor on the fateful night.

The “West Side Story” and “Rebel Without a Cause” star drowned on the night of November 29, 1981 off California‘s Catalina Island, after an evening of drinking and eating with her husband and actor Christopher Walken.

Her “accidental” death at age 43 has long been a Hollywood mystery – but was thought to have been laid to rest until a November 2011 surprise announcement that police were reviving the probe.

A “re-evaluation” coroner’s report, dated last May but published Monday, recounts how Wood, Wagner and Walken were drunk after dining in a restaurant, and continued drinking after returning to the couple‘s boat the “Splendour.”

The captain of the boat, Dennis Davern, said they realized Wood was missing around midnight, but initially thought she might have returned to shore using the boat’s dinghy.

Wagner raised the alarm with authorities at 1:30 am. A search was launched, and her body was found floating face-down in the ocean some 200 yards from shore, while the dinghy was found nearby, about a mile from the main boat.

In the new report, a copy of which was published by the LA Times, the

Medical Examiner said some of the injuries found on her body did not necessarily come from an accident, such as falling from the boat or dinghy.

“With the presence of fresh bruises in the upper extremities in the right forearm/left wrist area and a small scratch in the anterior neck, this Examiner is unable to exclude non-accidental mechanism causing these injuries,” it said.

And it added: “This Medical Examiner is unable to exclude non-volitional, unplanned entry into the water.”

As a result, “the cause of death will be changed to drowning and other

undetermined factors. Manner will be changed to undetermined. How injury occurred will be listed as found floating in ocean,” the report concluded.

“Circumstances not clearly established.”

Captain Davern, who co-wrote a 2009 book about the mystery, said the couple had a fierce row shortly before she vanished, and that Wagner then delayed a search that could have saved her.

A publicist for Wagner said when the case was re-opened that his family supported the police probe, while warning against people “trying to profit from the 30 year anniversary of her tragic death.” (AFP)

2011년 해당 사건에 대한 재조명이 이루어졌으며 LA 카운티 검시관이 월요일 보고서를 발표했다. 사건 재조명은 우드의 남편이었던 배우 로버트 와그너(Robert Wagner)와 동료배우와 그날 밤 있었던 일에 대한 의문에서 시작되었다.

“웨스트사이드스토리(West Side Story)”와 “이유없는 반항(Rebel Without a Cause)”의 스타였던 우드는 1981년 11월 29일 캘리포니아의 카탈리나섬(Catalina Island)에서 익사했다. 그녀의 남편과 배우 크리스토퍼 월켄(Christopher Walken)과 저녁 식사를 한 뒤였다.

2011년까지 당시 43세였던 그녀의 죽음은 사고사인 것으로 치부되었다.

보고서는 5월 자로 기록되어 있지만 월요일 출판되었다. 보고서는 우드와 와그너 그리고 월켄이 그날 식당에서 식사와 함께 술을 마시고 부부의 배인 “스플렌도어(Splendour)”에 다녀와서도 술을 마신 상황에 대해 서술하고 있다.

배의 선장이었던 데니스 데번(Dennis Davern)은 우드가 자정 무렵 사라졌지만 처음에는 그녀가 스플렌도어의 소형 보트를 이용해 돌아올 것이라고 생각했다고 전했다.

와그너는 새벽 1시 30분 경 당국에 상황을 알렸다. 수색이 시작되었고 물가에서 180미터 떨어진 곳에서 시신이 떠올랐다. 메인보트에서 1.6킬로미터 떨어진 곳이었다.

월요일 발표된 보고서 사본이 LA타임즈(LA Times)에 게재되었다. 검시 의사는 우드의 몸에 있는 상처들이 보트에서 떨어지거나 물에 빠진 것에 의한 것이 아닐 수 있다고 밝혔다. 보고서는 우드의 오른쪽 팔뚝이나 손목 혹은 목에 있는 상처들이 익사가 아닌 다른 사고경위가 있다는 사실을 부인할 수 없게끔 한다고 검시 의사가 전했다고 서술하고 있다. 물에 빠진 것이 본인의 의지와 무관하다는 분석이었다.

2009년 사건과 관련한 책을 펴내기도 한 배의 선장이었던 데번은 우드가 사라지기 직전 부부의 분위기가 심각했다고 전했다. 와그너가 그녀를 찾는 것을 미뤘다고도 전한 바 있다.

사건의 재조명은 우드의 가족이 경찰에 적극적으로 요구하고 지원을 한 끝에 이루어졌다. 이에 사람들은 그녀의 죽음 30주년으로 이득을 보려는 속셈이라는 비판을 하기도 했다. (코리아헤럴드)
