North Korean leader Kim Jong-un sent a bunch of candy to every young child in the poverty-stricken country to celebrate his birthday, the North‘s state-run media reported Monday.

The Korean Central Broadcasting Station picked up in Seoul said Kim sent bags filled with candy and other confectionaries to children attending elementary school, kindergarten and day care centers.

The presents mark the first time that Kim has given candy on his birthday after inheriting power following the sudden death of his father in December 2011.

Kim’s birthday falls on Tuesday, although the exact year of birth differs depending on the source. Pyongyang has officially said he was born in 1982 making him 31 this year, but Seoul‘s spy agency maintains he was born in 1984, while others speculated his birth year is 1983.

The media outlet claimed that the gifts reflected the “paternal love” he holds for children and the desire to give top priority to the sharing of good fortunes with the future generation.

It added that because of the onset of cold weather affecting shipping routes to some remote islands in the Yellow Sea, Kim ordered the presents be airlifted, which delighted kids and adults alike.

Each present, usually wrapped in a vinyl bag, contains about a kilogram worth of candy, crackers, caramel and gum, and is delivered two or three days ahead of the birthday.

The broadcasting station said children and their parents praised Kim’s love for his people and proclaimed him to be a hero who can open a new era for the country.

Related to the handing out of candy to children under 10, North Korean watchers in Seoul said it is part of a broader political campaign by the communist country‘s leadership to win favor from youngsters and their parents. Such a step can strengthen the young leader’s relatively weak grip on power, experts speculated.

The giving of candy was first started in 1980 by Kim Il-sung, the North‘s founder and grandfather to the incumbent leader. This tradition was adopted by Kim Jong-il when he took power from his father in 1994.

“At present Kim Jong-un’s birthday has not been declared a national holiday like that of his father and grandfather, but there seems to be a move to gradually highlight it to the public,” said Cho Bong-hyun, an analyst at the IBK Economic Research Institute.

He said that the latest event is designed to build up loyalty among kids and youngsters who will lead the country in the future. (Yonhap News)

북한 김정은 국방위원회 제1위원장이 자신의 생일(1.8)을 앞두고 전국의 초등학교•유치원•탁아소 어린이에게 사탕과자 선물을 보 냈다.

조선중앙방송은 7일 “전국의 소학교(초등학교) 학생들과 유치원, 탁아소 어린이들이 사랑의 선물을 한가득 받아 안았다”며 “(김 제1위원장은) 친 어버이의 다심한 정으로 좋은 것이 생기면 후대들에게 선참으로(먼저) 안겨주시고, 못다 주신 사랑이 있으신 듯 이번에 전국의 어린이들에게 당과류(사탕과자)들을 보냈다”고 보도했다.

특히 김 제1위원장은 바닷물이 얼어 뱃길이 막힌 서해 섬마을 어린이에게 선물을 보내려고 항공기까지 동원했다.

중앙방송은 “6일 서해의 서도와 석도, 자매도, 수운도, 다도, 대화도, 납도, 애도, 탄도로 비행기들이 날았다”며 “섬에 착륙한 비행기를 에워싼 주민과 어린이들은 환호를 올리며 기쁨에 겨워 어찌할 줄 몰랐다”고 밝혔다.

비행기를 맞이한 섬마을 어린이들은 평양 하늘을 바라보며 “김정은 원수님 정말 고맙습니다”라고 외쳤고 학부모들은 “원수님은 장군님 그대로 인민사랑, 후대사랑의 새 역사를 펼쳐가시는 절세의 위인”이라고 찬양했다고 이 방송은 전했다.

김정은 제1위원장의 생일을 맞아 어린이들에게 사탕과자를 선물한 것은 이번이 처음이다.

북한 어린이들은 올해부터는 한 해에 세 번의 사탕과자 선물을 받게 될 것으로 보인다. 북한은 지난 1980년대부터 매해 김일성 주석의 생일(4월15일)과 김정일 국방위원장 생일(2월16일)을 맞아 전국의 만 10세 이하 어린이들에게 사탕과자를 선물 했다.

생일 2∼3일 전에 전국의 소학교와 유치원, 탁아소는 선물 전달식을 열고 투명한 비닐봉지 안에 알사탕, 과자, 캐러멜, 콩사탕, 껌 등이 든 무게가 1kg 정도의 선 물을 어린이들에게 나눠줬다.

김정은 제1위원장이 이 같은 ‘선심 정치’를 이어가는 것은 앞으로 김정은 체제를 떠받칠 어린이와 학부모의 마음을 잡아 취약한 권력기반을 강화하겠다는 의도가 담긴 것으로 분석된다.

조봉현 IBK기업은행 경제연구소 연구위원은 “북한이 아직 명절로까지 공식화하지는 않았지만 실제로는 김정은 생일을 서서히 부각하려는 시도”라며 “김정은이 평소에 했던 것처럼 청년이나 어린이 등 차세대 북한 주민들의 충성심을 유도하기 위해 마련한 이벤트”라고 분석했다. (연합뉴스)
