Incoming President Park Geun-hye’s transition team was officially launched on Sunday, laying the groundwork for the new government and the major agenda items it will pursue over the next five years.

After holding a signboard hanging ceremony in front of the committee’s headquarters in central Seoul, the transition team was scheduled to meet with Park and receive their certificates of appointment.

Later in the day, the team will hold its first general meeting, which will be presided over by its chief, Kim Yong-joon.

The committee is made up of a chairman, a vice chairman and 24 senior members tasked with handling different policy areas in their respective subcommittees.

On Friday, Park finalized the lineup of her transition team by naming former Defense Minister Kim Jang-soo to oversee external affairs, security and North Korea policies, while appointing a number of professors to top positions within the team.

Committee chief Kim, who announced the line-up, said the committee “is aimed at setting the administrative philosophy and draft policy platforms on which direction the new government will move so that the incoming government will be launched smoothly.”

Park will be inaugurated as South Korea‘s first female president in late February. (Yonhap)
