The number of locals and foreigners going in and out of South Korea rose 10.8 percent in 2012 from a year earlier, surpassing the 50-million mark last year for the first time, the Justice Ministry said Sunday.

The tally came to some 50.32 million, with the number of locals reaching 28.14 million, while that of foreigners came in at 22.18 million, the ministry said.

Some 3.49 million Japanese visited South Korea last year, followed by China with 2.48 million, according to the ministry.

The Korean wave, also known as hallyu, led to a sharp rise in visitors from the neighboring countries as Korean pop music, known as K-pop, and TV dramas have gained popularity, the ministry said.

Also, streamlined procedures to issue visas for Chinese people, which took effect in the latter half of 2010, led to more Chinese visiting South Korea, it said.

The ministry said a total of 1.44 million foreigners resided in the country last year, up 3.6 percent from a year earlier.

The ministry expects locals and foreigners going in and out of the country to reach 56 million this year. (Yonhap)
