North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on Tuesday issued a verbal New Year's message, marking the first time in 19 years that such a message has been read by the North's leader on its television and radio.

In the message broadcast by the North's Korean Central TV and Korean Central Broadcasting Station, Kim called for efforts to resolve inter-Korean tension by following through on previous inter-Korean joint declarations. He also vowed to prioritize agriculture and light industry in his economic policy.

The voice message is the first of its kind since North Korean founder and Kim's grandfather Kim Il-sung delivered one in 1994, the year of his death.

Since 1994, the country had released New Year's messages in the form of a joint editorial by its three main newspapers.

Kim Jong-un started the new year by watching a musical performance along with his wife, the North's state media said.

A New Year's performance was staged by the country's prestigious Moranbong Band in Pyongyang at midnight and "Kim Jong-un ... together with his wife, Ri Sol-ju, arrived at the venue of the performance," the (North) Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said in an English-language dispatch.

High ranking officials, diplomatic envoys, scientists and other workers who contributed to the North's December long-range rocket launch were invited to the performance, according to the KCNA.

"Kim Jong-un and Ri Sol-ju shook hands with diplomatic envoys, representatives of international organizations and military attaches of foreign embassies here and their wives, offering congratulations and best wishes, and talked with them," the state news agency said.

The performance was comprised of "high praises of the undying feats" of the two late leaders of the North -- Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il -- and also staged "with the ardent reverence for Kim Jong-un who is ushering in the era of great prosperity," according to the KCNA report.

The year 2013 marks the young leader's second year at the helm of one of the world's most reclusive countries since his father Kim Jong-il died of a heart attack in December 2011. (Yonhap News)

북한 김정은 국방위원회 제1위원장은 1일 남북 간 대결 상태 해소와 이를 위한 남북공동선언의 이행을 강조했다.

김 제1위원장은 이날 조선중앙TV, 조선중앙방송 등 북한 매체를 통해 중계된 신 년사에서 "나라의 분열상태를 종식시키고 통일을 이룩하는데서 나서는 중요한 문제는 북과 남 사이의 대결상태를 해소하는 것"이라며 "북남공동선언을 존중하고 이행하는 것은 북남관계를 진전시키고 통일을 앞당기기 위한 근본 전제"라고 밝혔다.

이 같은 언급은 박근혜 대통령 당선인의 차기 정부 구성을 앞두고 남북관계 개선에 대한 기대감 속에서 6•15공동선언과 10•4선언의 이행을 촉구한 것으로 풀이 된다.

김 제1위원장은 대외문제와 관련해 "공화국을 우호적으로 대하는 세계 여러나라 들과의 친선협조관계를 확대발전시키며 지역의 평화와 안정을 수호하고 세계의 자주 화를 실현하기 위해 적극 노력할 것"이라며 원칙적인 입장을 밝혔다.

그러나 핵문제 등 북미관계와 관련된 사안에 대해서는 입장을 밝히지 않았다.

그는 "경제건설의 성과는 인민생활에서 나타나야 한다"며 인민생활 향상 입장을 재차 강조하고 "농업과 경공업은 여전히 올해 경제건설의 주공전선"이라고 강조했다.

북한은 작년 신년공동사설에서도 경공업과 농업 부문에서 대혁신을 강조했다.

김 제1위원장은 또 "군력을 백방으로 강화하는 길에 강성국가도 있고 인민의 안녕과 행복도 있다"며 안보의 중요성을 강조하면서 "국방공업부문에서는 우리식의 첨단무장장비를 더 많이 만들어 백두산 혁명강군의 병기창으로 사명을 다해야 한다"고 말했다.
