South Korea will complete the process of replacing existing analogue broadcast services provided by terrestrial TV channels with superior digital broadcasting as scheduled on Monday, officials said.

Terrestrial TV stations such as KBS, MBC and SBS have gradually turned off analogue broadcasting in provincial areas from early this year. They will terminate the services in Seoul and its satellite cities, the only area that has remained unaffected from the change, as planned at 4 a.m. Monday, the Korea Communications Commission said Sunday.

A digital television must be purchased or a digital converter needs to be installed after analogue services are terminated to watch terrestrial TV channels.

But those who watch the channels through cable TV or other paid services will not be affected.

People in the lower income bracket can get government subsidies of up to 100,000 won ($93.7) for the purchase of a digital TV or get a digital converter for free, according to the commission.

Others can also get part of the cost for borrowing a digital converter from post offices and install antennas to watch digital broadcasting, it added. (Yonhap News)

지상파TV 아날로그방송 완전 종료

31일 서울과 수도권에서 지상파TV의 아날로그 방송 송출이 중단돼 100% 디지털 지상파 TV 시대가 열린다.

30일 방송통신위원회와 방송계에 따르면 그동안 지역별로 순차적으로 아날로그 방송의 송출을 중단해 온 지상파 방송사들은 31일 새벽 4시를 기해 전국에서 마지막으로 서울과 수도권의 아날로그 방송을 종료한다.

이에 따라 지상파 TV방송을 직접 수신 방식으로 보던 아날로그 TV 사용자들은 이 시점 이후로는 디지털 컨버터를 설치해야 지상파 TV를 시청할 수 있다. 다만 케이블TV나 다른 유료방송을 통해 지상파 TV방송을 간접 수신하거나, 디지털TV를 이미 사용하고 있는 시청자는 영향을 받지 않는다.

지상파 TV방송을 계속해서 직접 수신 방식으로 보려는 아날로그TV 사용자는 디지털 컨버터를 설치해야 한다. 컨버터 설치 요청은 24시간 운용되는 디지털방송 콜센터(국번없이 124)에 하면 된다.

방통위는 서울과 수도권 지역의 디지털 미전환 가구가 아직 5만 가구 가량 남아있는 것으로 보고 있다.

미전환 가구가 디지털 전환 지원을 신청하면 컨버터와 안테나 설치까지 1∼3일 가량 걸릴 것으로 예상되므로 디지털 전환을 미처 하지 못한 시청자들은 빨리 신청하는 것이 좋다.

송상훈 방통위 디지털방송청책과장은 “이미 종료를 마친 지역의 디지털 미전환 가구는 극히 소수인 것으로 파악하고 있지만 아날로그 방송이 종료된 후에도 당분간은 디지털 전환 지원을 계속할 계획”이라고 말했다.

송 과장은 “아날로그 방송 종료를 앞두고 상담 전화가 폭주할 것으로 예상해 콜센터의 상담원 수를 대폭 늘렸다”며 “뒤늦게 전환을 신청하는 미전환 가구에 대해서는 최대한 빠른 시간 안에 조치를 완료할 계획”이라고 말했다.
