An entrepreneur in the Republic of the Congo is launching what he says is the first African-designed smartphone and tablet.

Verone Mankou said his company‘s VMK devices will run the Android operating system and will cost $170 for the smartphone and $300 for the tablet computer, the BBC reported Thursday.

“Only Africans can know what Africa needs,” Mankou said at a technical conference in Johannesburg, South Africa.

“Apple is huge in the United States, Samsung is huge in Asia and we want VMK to be huge in Africa.”

The devices will be sold in 10 other West African countries besides the Republic of the Congo as well as Belgium, France and India.

The VMK products will be produced in China, leading some to charge dishonesty in claiming as “African” products produced elsewhere and simply branded locally.

Mankou responded to the criticism on his company website, saying that while the smartphones and tablets were manufactured in China for cost reasons, the design and engineering was entirely African.

“We are somewhat offended by the disregard of those who persist in denying the authentication of our products, despite evidence,” he wrote.

“Most of those critics are either Afro-pessimistic (who argue that ’nothing good can come from Africa‘), or just (future) competitors.” (UPI)

아프리카에서 개발한 스마트폰과 태블릿 PC가 최초로 공개됐다.

콩고 공화국인 기업가 베론 맨코 (Verone Mankou)는 자신의 회사 VMK가 안드로이드 스마트폰을 170달러 (한화 18만 원), 태블릿 PC는 300달러 (32만 원)에 선보인다고 발표했다.

맨코는 “아프리카인들이 필요한 것은 아프리카인들만 안다”고 남아프리카의 조한스버그에서 열린 컨퍼런스에서 말했다

그는 또 “애플은 미국에서 선전하고, 삼성은 아시아에서 각광받고 있다 우리 VMK가 아프리카에서 그렇게 성공하길 바란다”며 포부를 밝혔다.

이 기기들은 콩고 공화국과 서아프리카 10개국과 더불어 벨기에, 프랑스, 인도에도 출시될 예정이다.

그러나 “아프리카”제품이라고 선전만 했을 뿐 실제 생산은 중국에서 이뤄진다는 것을 두고 부정직한 행위라는 비판도 일고 있다.

이에 맨코는 비용적 측면을 고려해 중국에서 제조를 선택했으나 디자인과 기술 모두 아프리카 자체 개발된 것이라고 회사 공식 웹사이트를 통해 대응했다.

그는 “증거가 있음에도 불구하고 계속적으로 자사 제품에 대한 인증을 부인하는 이들로 인해 불쾌함을 느낀다”며 “비난하는 이들의 대부분은 아프리카에서 만든 제품은 좋은 것이 없다고 주장하는 아프리카-비관론자들이나 경쟁사들이다”라며 입장을 밝혔다.
