ZURICH (AP) ― World Cup and European champion Spain has completed a full year atop the FIFA rankings, 2014 World Cup host Brazil has plummeted to No. 18 and the U.S. dropped one spot to No. 28.

Brazil has dropped while playing only non-competitive matches, and failed to win last month.

Brazil lost against Argentina, which remains at No. 3, and drew with Colombia, which rises to No. 5.

The rankings weigh a four-year results cycle, and Brazil lost points from a 6-2 victory over Portugal in 2008.

Spain leads No. 2 Germany, with European Championship finalist Italy at No. 4. England is No. 6, and Europe fills all places through Switzerland at No. 12.

Ivory Coast is Africa’s best at No. 14. Mexico is No. 15, and Japan leads Asia at No. 22.

Barcelona, Madrid head Champions League last 16

NYON, Switzerland (AP) ― Champions League favorite Barcelona and nine-time European champion Real Madrid are among nine former winners in the last-16 draw Thursday.

The bitter rivals are joined by Malaga and Valencia, making Spain the best represented of nine countries with teams in the knockout stage.

Germany has group winners Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Schalke all seeded in the draw.

England challenges with Manchester United and Arsenal, and Italy has AC Milan and Juventus.

Milan seeks an eighth European title after offseason cost-cutting sales including forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic and defender Thiago Silva to Paris Saint-Germain. An Ibrahimovic reunion could be the most intriguing pairing.

Clubs cannot be drawn against a group-stage opponent, or another from its home country.

First-leg matches are played from Feb. 12-20. Return matches are from March 5-13.

English soccer hit with another racism complaint

LONDON (AP) ― The Football Association is investigating allegations a player was racially abused by spectators during an FA Cup second-round match.

Macclesfield manager Steve King complained that his captain, Nat Brown, was called a monkey by some fans of non-league Barrow as he came out for the second half of Tuesday’s game.

The FA says “we are now liaising with both clubs and the police.”

The teams will meet for a replay on Dec. 29 after Tuesday’s match finished 1-1.

It is the latest allegation of racism to blight the English game, following more high-profile incidents involving Chelsea captain John Terry and Liverpool forward Luis Suarez, among others.
