President Lee Myung-bak congratulated ruling party presidential candidate Park Geun-hye on her certain victory in the tightly contested South Korean election Wednesday, his office said.

"Congratulations on your victory. You went through a lot of trouble," presidential spokesman Park Jung-ha quoted Lee as saying in a two-minute phone conversation with the candidate.

Lee called the 60-year-old candidate of the conservative Saenuri Party at around 9:40 p.m. as the official vote count showed Park would defeat her main rival Moon Jae-in of the main opposition Democratic United Party, the spokesman told reporters.

"The weather has been very cold, so please take care of your health," Lee was quoted by the spokesman as telling Park.

In an earlier statement read by the spokesman, Lee's office Cheong Wa Dae congratulated Park on her victory and thanked the people for conducting the election in a "calm and fair manner."

"We hope the great choice of the Republic of Korea will lead to grand national unity and the people's happiness," the statement said, in a reference to two of the president-elect's key campaign pledges.

Cheong Wa Dae also offered words of comfort to the other candidates who lost and promised to do its best to effectively handle state affairs and ensure a smooth transition of power until Lee's term ends in late February.

李대통령, 朴당선인과 통화.."축하합니다"

이명박 대통령은 19일 새누리당 박근혜 당선인에게 전화를 걸어 "당선을 축하한다. 고생이 많았다"고 말했다.

이 대통령은 이날 오후 9시40분께 박 당선인에게 직접 전화를 걸어 이같이 말하 고 "날씨가 매우 추웠는데 건강 잘 챙기시라"고 밝혔다고 박정하 청와대 대변인이 전했다. 통화는 2분여간 이뤄졌다.

이 대통령은 이와 별도로 조만간 하금열 대통령실장과 이달곤 정무수석비서관을 박 당선인에게 보내 축하인사를 하고 축하난도 전달할 예정이다. 이 대통령과 박 당선인 간 회동 가능성도 점쳐진다.

청와대 고위 관계자는 "구체적인 일정은 아직 확정되지 않았다"면서 "당선인 측과 협의할 것"이라고 말했다.

한편, 청와대 경호처는 이날 박 후보가 여의도 새누리당사에 도착하자마자 현직 대통령에 버금가는 경호에 들어갔다.

경호처는 이와 함께 박 후보의 자택과 여의도 당사는 물론 박 당선인이 대국민 메시지를 발표할 광화문 광장에도 경호인력을 배치했다.
