The rumor based on Mayan calendar that the world ends on Dec. 21 has caused some people serious problems.

They are even complaining of physical pain over the rumor, according to NASA. To counter the global fears, some authorities such as the Vatican and the U.S. government have publicly announced that the rumor is groundless.

A poll conducted by Ipsos research center, 10 percent of the global respondents said they believed that the Mayan calendar marked the end of the world. Another 2 percent of respondents said they strongly agreed with the idea. By nation, Turkey and the U.S. recorded the highest rate with 22 percent of them agreeing so. Only 13 percent of Koreans shared the view.

On the other hand, the rumor is used commercially and many parts of the world seem to be enjoying the forthcoming event. A month ago, end-of-world kits were released in Russia. The kit producer said that it could be a playful gift. Sirince, a small village in Turkey where Christians believe the Virgin Mary who would save the world ascended to heaven, has been receiving a record number of visitors.

In Korea, many users posted various comments on the topic. Twitter user @yuri_voice said, “I remember I was trembling at the rumor when I was a kid, and now it is just a few days away!” Another user @newciferr commented, “I heard the world was going to end but I think it’s only my life falling to ruins.”

Several people reaffirmed their will to vote in Korea’s presidential election Wednesday, regardless of the doomsday prediction. User @HOGU8475 said, “The presidential election and the day of the world’s end two days after, the two biggest shows!”

지구종말 21일, 네티즌 왈가왈부

한국에는 지구종말설의 날짜인 21일과 함께 19일 대선을 앞두고 있어, 이를 두고 네티즌들의 댓글이 이어져 눈길을 끈다. 많은 이들이 세계종말이 다가와도 꼭 투표를 하겠다고 전했다. 트위터 ID @HOGU8475는 “대선, 이어서 세계종말, 두 개의 엄청난 이벤트가 시작되는군!”이라고 말했으며 ‏@yuri_voice는 “어릴 때 들은 지구종말의 날이 이제 며칠 앞으로 다가왔다니!”라고 말했다. @newciferr는 “세상이 망한다는데 어째 내 인생만 망하는 것 같아.”라고 적었다. (코리아헤럴드)
