North Korea may have decided to reschedule its planned rocket launch apparently due to technical problems, a senior government source in Seoul said Sunday.

The North's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said earlier in the day Pyongyang was considering postponing the dates of its rocket launch, scheduled for between Dec. 10-22, providing few details.

The announcement sparked speculation over the latest development as recent satellite images showed that the North has installed all three-stages of the long-range rocket on the launch pad in its northwestern tip and was preparing for fuel injection, despite mounting international pressure.

The government source familiar with the matter said the North is considering delaying the launch date due to "technical problems," saying "abnormal signs" have been spotted since Saturday afternoon. He didn't elaborate.

Some analysts in Seoul speculate that the communist state might have considered mounting international pressure in making the move.

Even China, its last remaining ally, has voiced concern over the North's move to launch the rocket.

Others said inclement weather might have forced Pyongyang to consider rescheduling the launch, as heavy snow blanketed the North's northwest, where the rocket is set to be launched.

북한의 장거리 로켓(미사일) 발사시기 조정 검토는 기술적인 문제 때문에 이뤄지고 있는 가능성이 높은 것으로 알려졌다.

이 문제에 정통한 정부의 한 소식통은 9일 북한이 장거리 로켓 발사시기 조정 검토 발표를 한 이유와 관련, "기술적인 문제로 보인다"고 밝혔다.

이 같은 추정이 사실이라면 북한이 당초 10일부터 22일까지로 설정한 발사 예고 시기 내에 로켓을 발사하지 못할 가능성이 높은 것으로 관측된다.

북한은 평안북도 철산군 동창리의 미사일 발사장에 3단 로켓을 장착한 뒤 발사 준비를 위한 로켓 동체 점검 및 통신 점검 등의 활동을 펼쳐온 것으로 알려졌다.

북한은 당초 이르면 8일부터 로켓에 연료를 주입할 것으로 예상됐으나 연료주입 작업이 시작됐다는 사실이 확인되지 않았다.

북한은 9일 새벽 조선우주공간기술위원회 대변인의 언급을 통해 "일련의 사정이 제기되어 우리의 과학자, 기술자들은 `광명성-3호' 2호기 발사 시기를 조절하는 문제를 심중히 검토하고 있다"고 말했다고 조선중앙통신이 보도했다.
