The Japanese Ministry of Defense has deployed interceptor missiles around the Tokyo metropolitan area to counter a possible threat from North Korea’s long-ranged missile test.

Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported on Thursday that the Japanese military has sent Patriot interceptor missiles to military facilities located in Tokyo, Chiba and Saitama.

North Korea’s central news agency announced last week that the Kwangmyongsong-3 Earth observation satellite would be launched by the Unha-3 carrier rocket from the Sohae Space Center between Dec. 10 and 22.

In addition to the metropolitan area, Japan also installed a Patriot interception system near Okinawa, the Japanese territory that is closest to the North Korean rockets’ trajectory.

The planned trajectory for the rocket is to the south. Since Tokyo is to the east, the rocket is unlikely to go near the Japanese capital if the original plan is kept to.

The Japanese defense authorities said in a statement that the interceptor missiles were for the defense of the capital area in case the North Korean rocket or related debris fell on Japanese soil.

Meanwhile, South Korea and the U.S. are to focus on relatively “peaceful” leverage.

The two allies said Wednesday that they would concentrate their diplomacy on persuading North Korea to scrap the launch by inviting China and Russia, which have strong influence on the world’s most-isolated country, to pressure Pyongyang.

日, 도쿄 인근에 패트리어트 배치! 왜?


일본 방위성이 북한 장거리 미사일 발사에 대비해 도쿄를 포함한 수도권 일대에 요격 미사일을 배치했다.

일본 교도통신은 목요일 일본 방위성이 도쿄, 지바, 사이타마 지역의 군 시설에 패트리어트 요격 미사일을 배치했다고 보도했다.

북한 조선중앙통신은 지난 주 오는 12월 10일에서 22일 사이에 광명성 3호 관측 위성을 실은 운하 3호 로켓을 소해우주센터에서 발사할 예정이라고 밝혔다.

일본 국방당국은 성명을 통해 이번 요격미사일 배치는 북한의 미사일이나 그 잔해가 일본 영토에 떨어지는 경우를 대비하기 위한 것이라고 밝혔다.

또, 수도권 지역뿐만 아니라 이번에 예정된 북한 미사일의 궤적에 인접한 오키나와 지역에도 별도로 패트리어트 요격 미사일 시스템을 설치했다고 밝혔다.

한편 한국과 미국은 비교적 평화적인 방법으로 북한 미사일 발사에 대응할 예정이다.

한미 양국은 지난 수요일 북한을 설득하는 방향으로 외교력을 집중시키겠다고 밝혔다. 이에 북한에 강력한 영향력을 지닌 중국과 러시아를 설득해 동북아 지역 평화를 위해 북한과의 협상에 참여할 것을 촉구할 예정이다.
