The weekend collapse of a highway tunnel about 50 miles west of Tokyo killed nine people, authorities said early Monday.

Kyodo News reported police confirmed there were nine bodies in three vehicles trapped in the 2 1/2-mile-long Sasago Tunnel on the Chuo Expressway in Yamanashi prefecture.

The Japanese broadcaster NHK reported emergency officials found five bodies in a van, the body of a man in a refrigerated truck and three other bodies in a car.

NHK said there were about 30 vehicles in the tunnel when 150-200 feet of the concrete ceiling collapsed about 8 a.m. Sunday.

Kyodo said the five victims in the one vehicle included three men and two women, all in their 20s from Tokyo. The Japanese news service said one 28-year-old woman in that vehicle got out alive.

The Japanese news service said two women were taken to a hospital with injuries. One had moderate injuries and the other had minor injuries.

Highway security cameras showed large columns of black smoke pouring out of the tunnel, which was opened to traffic in 1977, that prevented firefighters from entering to search for victims.

NHK said there were reports of other people making their way out of the tunnel following collapse and subsequent fire. The Japanese broadcaster said the smoke kept rescuers hundreds of feet away and traffic on the highway was closed in the vicinity. (UPI)

교도통신은 한 대의 차량에 남자 3명과 여자 2명이 동승하고 있었고 모두 도쿄 출신의 20대라고 밝혔다. 일본 현지 언론에 따르면 그 중 28세 여성은 차량에서 빠져 나왔다고 한다.

현지 언론은 상해를 입은 여성 2명은 병원으로 호송되었다고 언급했다. 한 명은 경미한 부상만 입었고 다른 한 명 또한 크게 다치지 않았다.

고속도로 안전 카메라에 잡힌 영상에서 붕괴된 사사고 터널로부터 뿜어져 나온 엄청난 양의 검은 연기가 소방수들의 구조작업을 어렵게 만든 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 사사고 터널은 1977년 완공된 주요 교통정체지역이다.

붕괴된 터널 안 치솟는 불길 아래에서도 터널을 빠져 나온 사람이 여러 명 있었다고 NHK는 밝혔다. 현지 언론에 따르면 검은 연기는 소방수들의 구조 작업을 크게 지연시켰으며 인근의 고속도로 진입이 차단되었다. (코리아헤럴드)
