Lee Choon-sang, one of Saenuri Party presidential candidate Park Geun-hye’s closest aides since the 1990s, died in a car accident while relocating to a rally site in Hongcheon, Gangwon Province on Sunday, a party official said.

The vehicle carrying Lee and five other campaign members slid off the road and crashed into a utility pole while trying to avoid a collision with a car in front, said party spokesman Rep. Lee Sang-il.

Lee died in the crash, while the others were injured and taken to a nearby hospital, according to the party.

Reports said Park, devastated at the news, halted her campaign schedule to join them at the hospital and later returned to Seoul.

Lee had been one of Park’s closest confidants along with three other aides, having assisted the former chairwoman since her political debut in 1998. Lee had been in charge of Park’s public relations.

The Saenuri Party suspended all rallies using song or dance for the day. The opposition Democratic United Party sent a message of condolence and wished for a quick recovery of the injured.

새누리당 박근혜 보좌관 교통사고 사망!


2일 새누리당 박근혜 대선 후보의 측근인 이춘상 보좌관이 탄 승합차가 강원 홍천에서 교통사고가 나 이 보좌관이 숨지고 일행 5명이 중경상을 입었다.

홍천경찰서에 따르면 이날 낮 12시15분께 홍천군 두촌면 천현리 철정검문소 인근 44번 국도에서 카니발 승합차(운전자 임모씨•36)가 앞서 가던 차량을 피하려다 미끄러지면서 도로 우측 전신주 등을 들이받았다.

이 사고로 이 보좌관이 숨졌다. 또 함께 타고 있던 김우동 홍보팀장을 비롯해 유모(45)씨, 박모씨, 이모씨, 운전자 임씨 등 5명이 중경상을 입어 인근 홍천 아산병원으로 옮겨졌으나 김 팀장은 의식이 없는 상태다.

당 선대위 박종희 유세기획단장은 이날 여의도 당사에서 브리핑을 통해 "이춘상 보좌관이 탄 차량이 후보의 차량을 급하게 따라가는 과정에서 앞차를 피하려다 미끄러지면서 사고가 난 것으로 안다"며 "이 보좌관은 사망한 것으로 확인됐으며 다른 탑승자는 현재 홍천 아산병원으로 후송된 상태"라고 밝혔다.

이 보좌관이 타고 있던 카니발 승합차는 이날 오전 강릉, 속초, 인제지역 유세 일정을 마치고 춘천으로 향하던 박근혜 대선 후보의 차량을 뒤따라 이동하던 중이었다.

경찰은 사고 목격자 등을 상대로 정확한 사고 경위를 조사하고 있다.

사고 직후 박 후보는 추후 일정을 중단한 채 병원으로 이동한 것으로 알려졌다.
