Redknapp’s first game at Queens Park Rangers ends 0-0 at Sunderland

LONDON (AP) ― Harry Redknapp’s first match as manager of last-place Queens Park Rangers ended in a 0-0 tie at Sunderland on Tuesday night.

QPR (0-9-5), in its second season since promotion, is seven points from escaping the relegation zone. It was coming off a 3-1 loss at Manchester United last weekend.

“I felt more optimistic tonight than I did on Saturday,” Redknapp said. “I just have to keep encouraging them.”

In another match between struggling teams, Aston Villa defeated 19th-place Reading 1-0 as Christian Benteke scored on a header in the 80th minute and American goalkeeper Brad Guzan got his second straight shutout and fourth in 12 games.

Villa (3-7-4) moved up to 17th place with 13 points. Reading (1-6-6) has nine,

Spain

MADRID (AP) ― Real Madrid eased into the fifth round of the Copa del Rey with a 3-0 win over Alcoyano and a 7-1 victory on aggregate over the third-division team.

Angel di Maria ran onto a perfectly timed pass from Karim Benzema to open the scoring in the 72nd minute. Jose Callejon added goals in 89th minute and the first minute of injury time.

Denis Cheryshev became the first Russian to start a match for Madrid.

Real Betis, Las Palmas, Cordoba, Osasuna and Malaga also advanced.

Italy

ROME (AP) ― Alvaro Gonzalez, Miroslav Klose and Hernanes scored to lead Lazio over Udinese 3-0 in the Italian league.

Lazio’s Cristian Ledesma had a penalty kick saved by Federico Marchetti in the 11th minute, and Udinese captain Antonio Di Natale hit the crossbar in the 16th.

Lazio (9-4-2) has 29 points, two behind Serie A-leading Juventus and one back of Napoli and Inter Milan.

Germany

FRANKFURT (AP) ― Defending champion Borussia Dortmund could lose more ground in the Bundesliga following a 1-1 tie against promoted Fortuna Duesseldorf.

Jakub Blaszczykowski put Dortmund ahead when he scored on a volley in the 43rd minute, but Stefan Reisinger tied it in the 78th with his second goal in two games.

Dortmund (7-2-5) was missing playmaker Mario Goetz, midfielder Ilkay Guendogan and defender Mats Hummels, all sidelined by injuries.

Bayern Munich (11-1-1) visits Freiburg on Wednesday and can reopen an 11-point lead, which was its season high.

Hamburg got goals from Maximilian Beister, Artjoms Rudnevs and Milan Badelj in a 3-1 win over visiting Schalke. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored in the 80th minute for the visitors.

Mainz beat Eintracht Frankfurt 3-1 for its first win in Frankfurt and Hannover defeated Greuther Fuerth 2-0.
