Ulsan charity night to help Filipino typhoon victims

Manilla Town in Ulsan will run a special event to help victims of this year’s Typhoon in the Philippines on Saturday.

Rock & Rhythm to the Rescue will be held at the ZUZU Noretown in Sangnam-dong from 8 p.m.

The entertainment includes live music from bands including ‘Stache Potatoes, the Ulsan Pinoy Band and Pachucco Trio, as well as singles and couples dance competitions.

“I visited my country again last summer in August, and I myself experienced seeing roofs blown away by the strong winds, floods all over the place, rain that didn't stop pouring. Houses were washed away, people became homeless, and (I remember) seeing families and children with desperate looks,” said event organizer Maria Elena Famor, a naturalized Korean citizen from the Philippines, who is also the Asian community leader to the Ulsan International Volunteer Center.

Famor plans to use the money raised to replace roofs on the houses of a Mangyan tribal community.

“There are about 25 Mangyan families living in that community, with a minimum of 3 kids each. Their only main livelihood is farming, which isn't enough to provide the needs of the families,” she said.

Famor is also seeking donations of clothing to give to the typhoon victims.

Tickets are 10,000 won, and come with a free drink. They are available at Manilla Town, at Thursday’s open mic night at the Royal Anchor, or via 010 5744-0918.
