An autopsy report suggests former Turkish president Turgut Ozal died of poisoning in 1993, sources told Today's Zaman.

The Turkish newspaper said strychnine appears to be the cause of Ozal's death, and that the pesticide DDT was also found in his system.

The Council on Forensic Medicine (ATK) exhumed Ozal's body based on suspicions about his death among family members and current president Abdullah Gul. The report has not been officially released, but sources told Today's Zaman the ATK had changed Ozal's cause of death.

Ozal was 65 when he died in office in 1993 of what was believed to be a heart attack. Investigators noted strychnine can cause respiratory and cardiac arrest minutes after it is ingested.

As for DDT, the pesticide was banned in Turkey in 1980 but it was present in Ozal's body at levels high enough that investigators suspect Ozal unwittingly ate or drank the toxic chemical.

Additional toxins discovered in Ozal's remains included radioactive Polonium and Americium as well as DDE, another pesticide that can cause liver damage. Daily Zaman said investigators suspect the radioactive elements weakened Ozal and the other poisons killed him.

The next step in the investigation is finding out what Ozal ate and drank in his finals days and whether there was an intentional poisoning involved, the newspaper said.

오잘은 재임중이던 1993년, 심장마비로 사망한 것으로 알려졌다. 그러나 조사관들이 밝힌 바에 따르면 스트리크닌 역시 소화 직후 호흡질환과 심장마비를 유발할 수 있다고 한다. 또한 오잘의 체내에서 대량으로 검출된 DDT는 이미 1980년에 터키에서 사용이 금지되었기 때문에 그가 독약임을 알지 못하고 섭취했을 가능성도 제기되고 있다.

그 외에 오잘의 신체에서는 폴리늄과 아메리슘, 살충제 DDE 등이 추가로 검출되어 독살설에 힘을 실어주고 있다.

투데이즈 자만 측은 조사관들이 오잘이 사망 전 며칠간 무엇을 먹고 마셨는지, 그리고 누군가에게 의도적으로 독살당했는지 여부를 조사할 예정이라고 보도했다. (코리아헤럴드)
