A thief who stole cash from a convenience store five years ago was caught Thursday, said Jungbu Police Station in Seoul. Police could arrest the man, thanks to advanced investigation technology.

Lee, 32, threatened the 38-year-old female owner of the store with a knife, and took 290,000 won on Aug. 6, 2007. Police found fragments of his fingerprints on the cash register and a pack of cigarettes but the technology at that time could not identify the fingerprints.

The fingerprints were recently identified thanks to the “Automated Fingerprint Identification System” developed between 2007 and 2009. Police have resolved 34 unsolved cases using the system.

담배갑 때문에 5년전 범죄 '덜미'

편의점에서 강도질을 하고 달아난 30대가 모르고 남긴 ‘쪽 지문’ 때문에 5년 만에 덜미를 잡혔다.

서울 중부경찰서는 편의점 여주인을 흉기로 위협해 돈을 뺏고 달아난 혐의(강도)로 이모(32)씨를 구속했다고 22일 밝혔다.

이씨는 2007년 8월6일 오전 3시께 서울 중구 신당동 한 편의점에서 “나는 더는 갈 곳이 없는 사람이다”며 주인 김모(38·여)씨를 흉기로 위협하고 현금 29만원을 빼앗은 혐의를 받고 있다.

당시 경찰은 이씨가 편의점 금전등록기와 담뱃갑에 남긴 ‘쪽 지문’을 채취했으나 지문의 크기가 너무 작아 이씨의 신원을 확인할 수 없었고 사건은 미제로 남았다.

그러나 최근 경찰청 과학수사센터가 진화한 감식 기술을 활용해 이씨의 신원을 파악하는 데 성공했고 경찰은 추적 2달 만인 20일 서울 강동구 성내동 피시방에서 이씨를 검거했다.

이씨는 경찰조사에서 “생활비를 마련하기 위해 범행을 저질렀다”며 “사건이 미제로 끝난 줄 알았다”고 진술했다.

경찰 관계자는 “이씨는 일용직 노동일을 하며 고시원을 전전했다”며 “잡히고 나서 황당해하는 모습이었다”고 전했다. (연합뉴스)
