The only annual Formula One (F1) auto racing event in South Korea has bled red for the third straight year, race organizers said Wednesday.

The organizing committee for the F1 Korean Grand Prix said this year‘s event resulted in an operating loss of 39.4 billion won ($36.4 million).

The race has been held annually in Yeongam, South Jeolla Province, about 400 kilometers south of Seoul, since 2010.

The organizers said this year’s race cost them 74.5 billion won. They made 35.1 billion won from ticket sales, government grants and other revenue sources.

After the end of this year‘s race in October, the organizers said this year’s final drew 86,259 fans and the qualifying run attracted 56,523. Last year, they said, 64,000 came for the qualifier and 85,000 for the final.

The first race here in 2010 had a loss of 72.5 billion won, while the 2011 edition led to an operating loss of 61 billion won.

Another year of heavy financial loss prompted provincial council members to demand measures to cut deficits.

“Just because the amount of loss was cut from 70 billion won to 40 billion won, I am not sure we can call this year‘s race a success,” said Seo Dong-wook, a member of the South Jeolla council.

“We will need to take some fundamental steps to change it.”

An official of the organizing team blamed the global economic downturn for the lack of corporate sponsorships and advertising revenue.

The Korean Grand Prix is under a seven-year deal with F1, plus a five-year option.

‘핏빛 적자’ F1에 수백억 혈세 펑펑


2012 포뮬러원(F1) 코리아 그랑프리의 적자규모가 400억원에 육박한 것으로 밝혀졌다.

F1조직위원회는 21일 전남도의회 행정사무감사에서 올해 F1대회 개최 비용과 수익을 정산한 결과 394억원의 영업손실을 기록했다고 밝혔다.

대회에 들어간 비용은 운영비 235억과 F1대회 주관사인 FOM에 지급한 개최비용 510억원 등 745억원으로 집계됐다.

수입은 입장권 판매, 기업부스 판매 등 마케팅 수입 206억원, 국비지원 50억원, 스포츠 토토기금 25억원, 기타 수입 70억원 등 351억원이다.

막판 스포츠 기금 지원 등으로 애초 400억원대를 웃돌 것으로 예상된 적자폭은 다소 줄었다.

그러나 수백억대의 적자가 이어지면서 고질적인 적자 구조를 타개할 특단의 대책마련을 요구하는 목소리도 높아질 전망이다.

이에따라 정부로부터 대회 운영비 확보와 대기업의 적극적인 참여 유도, 대회 개최권자인 FOM과의 재협상 등이 필요하다는 지적이다.

대회 원년인 2010년에는 725억원, 지난해는 610억원의 적자를 기록했다.

3년간 누적 적자액은 1천729억원에 달했다.

올해 적자 규모가 줄었다고는 하지만 지난해 F1조직위가 재협상 후 공언한 200억원대 적자보다는 훨씬 많다.

따라서 수년간 혈세를 낭비하는 ‘고비용 대회’에 대한 비판의 목소리가 높다.

전남도의회 서동욱(순천)의원은 “700억원대 적자가 400억원대로 줄었다고 해서 성공한 대회라고 할 수 있는지 자괴감이 든다”며 “근본적 대책을 마련해야 할 것”이라고 지적했다.

F1조직위원회 관계자는 “미국과 유럽 등의 글로벌 금융위기로 인한 국내경기 위축으로 경주장내 기업후원 프로그램과 광고 유치가 기대에 미치지 못했다”며 “운영비 국비 지원, 모터클러스터 국책사업 선정 등 내년부터 수지개선이 나아질 것으로 본다”고 말했다.
