Stalled nuclear reactor receives green light to resume operation

A nuclear reactor, which came to a halt due to a malfunction in its turbine control system earlier this week, will resume its operation, officials said Thursday.
The Reactor-2 at Uljin Nuclear Power Plant in the southeastern region of the country automatically shut down on Sunday after a problem was detected in a system designed to supply steam into turbines. No radioactive leak was reported.
The Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP), the operator of the nuclear power plant, said that it received the green light from a nuclear safety committee to resume the operation of the reactor.
The KHNP did not reveal the exact time when the reactor will start but it is expected to reach its full electricity-producing capacity in the afternoon on Saturday.
The Uljin generator is a pressurized water reactor with a capacity of 950,000 kilowatts, and it has been producing power since September 1989. (Yonhap News)
