A man accused of repeatedly assaulting his 13-year-old daughter was convicted on Thursday.

The Gwangju District Court sentenced the man, identified only by his surname Kim, to two years behind the bar for habitual use of violence.

In March, Kim was indicted on suspicion of attacking and injuring his daughter over 14 times at his apartment in Gwangju, about 320 kilometers from Seoul. At that time, the daughter had a cast on her leg after a car accident and was allegedly reproached by her father for not doing housework.

The man also verbally attacked her, saying “go and be a hostess” when he found out that she contacted her mother. The parents are divorced.

Kim was previously convicted of violence against his ex-wife twice in 2008 and consulted for child abuse in 2010.

“A criminal charge is not always the proper way to treat cases but stern punishment is necessary to protect the child from someone who lost the ability to solve problems,” a judge said in a statement. 

“When deepened anger is formed in the beaten child’s heart. There is more possibility that the crime will get serious if neglected,” he added.

Ahead of the sentence, the court recommended the man read a book titled “Prophet,” written by Karil Gibran, referring to a phrase that read “children are not parents’ possessions.”

"왜 집안일 안해" 부상당한 딸 폭행

광주지법 형사7단독 이탄희 판사는 1일 친딸을 상습적으로 폭행한 혐의로(상해 및 폭행) 40대 김모씨에게 징역 2년을 선고했다.

김 씨는 이혼 후 지난해 3월 광주 광산구 모 아파트에서 교통사고로 다리 지지대를 한 딸 A(13)양이 집안일을 하지 않는다며 모두 14차례에 걸쳐 폭행하고 상해를 입힌 혐의로 기소됐다.

이 과정에서 김 씨는 전처와 통화했다는 이유로 딸을 넘어뜨려 상해를 입히고 ` 술집 여자나 되라'는 등 폭언도 일삼은 것으로 드러났다.

김 씨는 2008년에도 전처를 폭행해 두 차례 벌금을 선고받았고 2010년에는 아동 폭행으로 전문기관의 상담도 받기도 했다.

재판부는 판결문에서 "형사처벌이 능사는 아니지만 이미 자율적 해결능력을 상실한 경우 아동들을 보호하기 위해서라도 엄중한 처벌이 필요하다"며 "구타당한 자녀의 마음 깊이 분노가 형성되어 있어 내버려둘 경우 더 큰 범죄로 이어질 가능성도 있다"고 지적했다.

재판부는 선고에 앞서 칼릴 지브란이 쓴 `예언자' 가운데 `자녀는 부모의 소유물이 아니다'는 내용의 구절을 김씨에게 소개하며 일독을 권해 눈길을 끌었다.
