A BBC journalist who killed himself last week is believed to have been sexual harassed by a female co-worker, British media reported Thursday.

Russell Joslin, a 50-year-old radio reporter from Warwickshire, was found choking on Sunday in an apparent suicide attempt. He died the next day.

Joslin had been had been admitted to St. Michaels’ psychiatric hospital on Friday after being hit by a bus in another attempt to take his own life. He had been put on suicide watch since.

Joslin’s family and friend said unwanted sexual advances by a female broadcaster at a restaurant some time ago lead to the reporter’s mental breakdown and ultimately to his death.

They claimed that after he left the female coworker at the eatery, the woman left Joslin strings of violent messages, calling him “a loser on 27 grand a year,” and “weak.”

According to Joslin’s family and ex-girlfriend Lucy Poulson, the woman tormented him at work in various ways, including cutting him off while he was on air. Poulson said Joslin suffered from severe stress because “he knew that people don’t go very far by speaking out against organizations.”

Joslin’s parents held BBC responsible for failing to prevent their son’s death.

“There is some evidence to support accusations that Russell was being sexually harassed or bullied,” claimed Peter Joslin, the father of the late journalist. “I believe he was ignored by his bosses, despite outlining his concerns about the particular staff member he claimed had sexually harassed him.”

He argued that the alleged sexual harassment triggered the junior Joslin’s breakdown, and complained that although managers had ample opportunities to intervene, “nothing was done to help him.”

Joslin’s alleged tormentor claimed that she had done nothing wrong and said she knew nothing about Joslin family’s allegations.

한편 조슬린의 부모는 BBC측에서 아들의 자살을 방치했다고 주장하고 나섰다. 피터 조슬린은 아들이 성희롱을 당하거나 괴롭힘을 당했다는 사실을 뒷받침할 만한 증거들이 있었다고 주장했다.

그는 “그가 (러셀) 특정 인물로부터 성적인 괴롭힘을 당했다고 언급했음에도 상사들로부터 무시당했다”고 말했다.

피터 조슬린은 이러한 괴롭힘으로 인해 아들이 정신병을 얻었고, 결국 자살을 하게 되었다며 경영진이 러셀의 자살을 막을 수 있는 기회가 여러 번 있었음에도 도와주지 않았다며 비난했다.
