LS Cable & System, the world’s No. 3 cable maker, said Wednesday it has completed a power cable plant in Tarboro, North Carolina, in a bid to boost its presence in the world’s largest economy.

The move comes as the company beefs up efforts to bolster its global footing by focusing on the United States, the world’s leading producer and consumer of electric power.

“The completion of the plant is one of the most important moments in the 50-year history of LS Cable & System,” chairman Koo Ja-yeol said in a press release. “LS Cable will strive to be the global No. 1 cable maker.”

The new plant, established by LS Cable’s U.S. subsidiary Superior Essex, can produce up to 20,000 tons of signal and control cables, low-voltage power cables and medium-voltage power cables annually.

LS Cable, which spent roughly $64 million to construct the facility, said production lines that were completed in December have already been manufacturing 300V and 600V signal and control cables.

The company said the plant will first focus on manufacturing low to medium-voltage distribution cable products and later expand production to high value-added products, such as high-voltage cables for transmission and power solution products. (Yonhap News)
