An Army colonel is under investigation for allegedly passing confidential military information to his mistress, but there are thus far no signs she was spying for North Korea, an official said Friday.

The colonel from the Army Training and Doctrine Command, whose identity was withheld, was accused of passing 38 items of classified information -- 34 classed second-degree secret and four as third-degree secret -- to the woman around May, an official at the Defense Security Command said.

Military prosecutors are looking into the case, the official said.

The colonel told investigators the woman asked for military information, saying she had to write an academic paper.

Investigators are trying to determine whether North Korea was involved, but there has been no evidence yet pointing to her spying for Pyongyang, the official said.

A total of 63 items of classified military information have been leaked this year, a sharp rise from last year‘s 23 items, officials said. (Yonhap News)

육군 교육사령부에 근무하는 A 중령이 내연의 관계였던 한 여성에게 군사기밀을 무더기로 유출했다가 군 검찰에 넘겨진 것으로 알려졌다.

국군기무사령부 관계자는 5일 “A 중령이 올해 5월께 2급 기밀 34건과 3급 기밀 4건 등 총 38건의 군사 기밀을 내연녀에게 넘긴 것을 적발해 최근 이 사건을 군 검찰에 넘겼다”고 밝혔다.

군 검찰이 이 여성의 정확한 신원과 북한과의 관련성 등을 조사하고 있으나 아직까지 대공(對共) 용의점은 발견되지 않는 것으로 전해졌다.

합동참모본부에서 근무한 경력이 있는 A 중령은 기무사 조사에서 “(이 여성이) 군 관련 논문을 써야 하니 자료를 달라고 해서 줬다”고 말한 것으로 알려졌다.

기무사가 수사한 올해 군사기밀 유출 건수는 총 63건으로 작년(23건)에 비해 3배 가까이 증가했다.

A 중령이 유출한 2급 기밀 건수(34건)는 지난 4년간 유출된 2급 기밀 건수(67건)의 절반에 이른다.
