A group of six to seven North Korean fishing boats briefly crossed a tense maritime border with South Korea in the Yellow Sea on Wednesday, but retreated after a South Korean patrol boat broadcast a warning message, military officials said.

The warning message was broadcast when the fishing boats crossed the Northern Limit Line (NLL) border and strayed into South Korean waters at around 11:10 a.m.

"After our patrol boat ordered them to retreat, the North Korean fishing boats returned to the northern side of the NLL," a military official said on the condition of anonymity. 

A North Korean patrol boat was spotted in the northern side of the NLL, but it did not violate the de facto sea border, the official said. 

There were about 40 South Korean fishing boats on the southern side of the NLL at the time of the incursion, according to the official. 

The NLL was the scene of several bloody skirmishes between the navies of the two Koreas. 

North Korea does not recognize the NLL, arguing it was unilaterally drawn by the U.S.-led United Nations forces at the conclusion of the 1950-53 Korean War that ended in a truce. It has demanded that a new border be drawn further south. (Yonhap News)

북한어선 6∼7척 서해 NLL 월선했다가...


북한 어선들이 12일 한때 서해 북 방한계선(NLL)을 넘어 연평도 인근 해역에서 조업하다가 북측 해역으로 되돌아갔다.

북한 어선 6∼7척은 이날 오전 11시10분께 서해 연평도 인근 NLL에서 2마일(3.2㎞) 가량을 남하해 조업을 벌였다.

북한 어선이 NLL을 남하하자 우리 해군 고속정이 긴급 출동, 이들 어선에 NLL 침범 사실을 고지하고 북으로 퇴거 조치했다. 

군 관계자는 "고속정 1척이 출동해 퇴거 조치를 했고 북한 어선은 NLL 북쪽으로 돌아갔다"며 "북한 어선의 남하로 북한군 경비정도 기동했으나 NLL 남쪽으로 넘어오 지 않아 군사적 대치 상황은 발생하지 않았다"고 설명했다. 

해군은 북한 어선 퇴거 조치 중 연평도 꽃게조업 어선 등 40여 척의 조업을  통제하고 연평도로 귀항토록 했다. 

연평도를 오가는 여객선은 연평도 인근 해상에서 대기하다가 운항을 재개했다.
