A U.S. Catholic priest has apologized for saying victims of clergy abuse were seducers and says he did not intend to put blame on victims.

The Rev. Benedict Groeschel of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, in an opinion piece in the National Catholic Register, a conservative publication, said victims of sexual abuse are looking for father figures.

"People have this picture in their minds of a person planning to -- a psychopath. But that's not the case," he said. "Suppose you have a man having a nervous breakdown, and a youngster comes after him. A lot of the cases, the youngster -- 14, 16, 18 -- is the seducer."

In an apology posted Thursday on his organization's Web site, Groeschel -- who has worked with priests accused of abuse as head of Trinity Retreat House -- said he regretted "any harm I have caused anyone."

"A priest (or anyone else) who abuses a minor is always wrong and is always responsible," he said.

The Franciscan Friars of the Renewal also apologized, calling Groeschel's characterization of victims as seducers "inappropriate and untrue."

"Sexual abuse of a minor is a terrible crime and should always be treated as such," the organization said. "We are sorry for any pain his comments may have caused."

The group's apology said Groeschel's "health, memory and cognitive ability" have been fading since he was in a serious car crash seven years ago that put him in a coma for a month.

"We hope that these unfortunate statements will not overshadow the great good Fr. Benedict has done in housing countless homeless people, feeding innumerable poor families, and bringing healing, peace and encouragement to so many," the statement said.

In the National Catholic Register opinion piece, Groeschel asked why none of the boys abused by former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky had come forward and said first-time sexual offenders should not get prison sentences. (UPI)

성직자 폭탄발언 "성폭행 피해자가 유혹"

논란 가열되자 신부와 수도회 측 공식 사과

미국의 가톨릭 신부가 성직자들의 성폭행 사건을 두고 피해자들이 ‘유혹’해 일어난 일이라고 말한 것에 대해 공식사과와 해명에 나섰다.

프란시스코 부활 수도회의 베네딕트 그뢰셸(Rev. Benedict Groeschel) 신부는 보수 가톨릭지 내셔널 가톨릭 리지스터와의 인터뷰에서 성폭행 사건의 피해자들은 아버지 같은 존재를 찾는다며 “사람들은(성범죄자를) 정신병자로 보겠지만, 그렇지 않다”고 말했다.

그는 또 이 인터뷰에서 “신경쇠약에 걸린 남성에 젊은이들이 걸려든 것이라고 생각하지만, 많은 경우 14, 16, 18살의 어린 아이들이 유혹하는 것”이라고 말해 논란의 중심에 섰다.

지난 목요일(현지시각) 그로셸의 웹사이트에 올린 사과문에서 이 신부는 “누구라도 나로 인해 해를 입은 사람이 있다면 유감을 표한다”라며 “미성년자에게 성폭력을 가한 성직자(또는 그 외 누구라도)는 언제나 잘못된 행위이며, 책임져야 할 것”이라고 말했다.

이 신부가 속한 프란시스코 부활 수도회 또한 그뢰셸 신부가 피해자들을 ‘유혹하는 사람’으로 칭한 것에 대해 “부적절하고 진실되지 않은 발언”이라며 사과했다.

수도회는 “미성년자에게 성폭행을 가는 것은 끔찍한 범죄이며, 그에 온당한 처벌을 받아야 한다”며 “신부의 코멘트로 인해 발생한 고통에 대해 사과한다”고 덧붙였다.

또한 그뢰셸 신부가 7년전 교통사고로 한달 간 혼수상태에 빠졌다가 살아난 이후 신부의 “건강과 기억력, 인지력”이 저하되고 있다고 설명했다.

“우리는 이 불운했던 언급이 베네딕트의 신부가 지난 날 수많은 노숙자들을 위해 주택 건축에 힘써온 활동과 셀 수 없이 많은 가난한 이들을 먹이고 치유한 행적, 또한 많은 이들에게 평화와 격려를 주었던 그의 업적에 그림자를 드리우지 않기를 바란다”고 성명서를 통해 밝혔다.

논란이 된 인터뷰에서 그뢰셸 신부는 펜실베니아 주립대 미식축구팀 코치 제리 센더스키(Jerry Sandusky)에게 성폭행을 당한 남학생들은 왜 아무도 나서지 않느냐면서 성범죄 관련 초범은 징역형을 받아서는 안 된다고 말했다. 

제리 샌더스키는 지난 15년간 10명 이상의 남학생들을 상대로 성추행 또는 성폭행해 미국을 충격에 빠뜨렸으며 유죄 판결을 받았다.
