South Korea football player Ki Sung-yueng is poised to join Swansea City in the English Premier League, officials said Tuesday, Korean time, ending weeks of speculation about his future destination.

In an interview in Scotland, Swansea City Chairman Huw Jenkins said his club and Celtic FC, Ki’s current team, have agreed on a transfer fee for the South Korean midfielder.

“We are currently holding discussions with player and agent over personal terms,” Jenkins was quoted as saying on STV in Scotland. “We are aware of other clubs’ interest, but we are hopeful we can conclude a deal in the next 24 hours. We feel he is a very exciting young player who has a good career in front of him.”

Ki, 23, has been subject to transfer rumors over the summer.

Other Premier League clubs, such as Arsenal, Liverpool, Fulham and Queens Park Rangers (QPR), have reportedly been interested in Ki as well.

If the deal is finalized, Ki would become the 10th South Korean to play in the Premier League. There are currently three active players there: Park Ji-sung with QPR, Park Chu-young with Arsenal and Ji Dong-won with Sunderland.

Though Jenkins didn’t disclose the amount of the transfer fee, reports said it is believed to be around 5 million pounds (US$7.9 million).

Ki was an integral part of the South Korean squad that won the bronze medal at the London Olympics earlier this month. The medal granted him an exemption from the mandatory military service in South Korea.

After returning home following the Olympics, Ki hasn’t joined Celtic for the Scottish season. The Scottish club is in Sweden this week for Champions League playoff action.

Ki made his professional debut in 2006 with FC Seoul in South Korea’s K-League. He joined Celtic in January 2010 and helped the team win the Scottish Premier League title last season.

A central midfielder known for his on-field vision and knack for scoring long-range goals, Ki has represented South Korea in 47 international matches and has been a fixture in the team’s set pieces. He spent most of his youth career in Australia.

Swansea City finished 11th out of 20 teams in the English Premier League last season, its first following the promotion from the second-tier Football League Championship. (Yonhap News)

잉글랜드 프로축구 프리미어리그의 스완지시티가 기성용(23•셀틱)의 영입을 기정 사실화했다.

휴 젠킨스 스완지시티 회장은 21일(한국시간) 스코틀랜드 지역 TV채널 ‘STV’와 의 인터뷰에서 “기성용의 영입을 두고 셀틱과 이적료에 합의했다”고 말했다.

젠킨스 회장은 이어 “기성용의 에이전트와 세부 계약내용에 대해 논의중으로 이르면 24시간 안에 협상 타결에 이를 수 있을 것”이라며 “기성용은 아주 흥미롭고 장래가 촉망되는 선수다”라고 기대감을 드러냈다.

젠킨스 회장은 구체적인 이적료는 언급하지 않았으나 이 매체는 500만 파운드에 (89억)에 달한다고 추산했다.

로이터와 AFP 등 주요 통신사들도 젠킨스 회장의 이 인터뷰를 인용하면서 스완지시티가 이적료 600만 파운드(107억원)에 기성용을 영입하기로 셀틱과 합의했다고 보도했다.

기성용의 이적과 관련해 영입 경쟁에 뛰어든 구단 관계자로부터 구체적인 언급이 나온 것은 이번이 처음으로 젠킨스 회장의 말 대로라면 기성용의 스완지시티 이적은 사실상 확정 단계에 들어간 것으로 보인다.

최근 퀸스파크 레인저스(QPR), 풀럼, 리버풀, 아스널 등 프리미어리그 구단으로부터 러브콜을 받아온 기성용은 2010년 FC서울에서 스코틀랜드 프리미어리그 셀틱으로 이적한 뒤 2년 만에 ‘꿈의 무대’인 프리미어리그 입성을 눈앞에 뒀다.

스완지시티 이적이 확정되면 기성용은 2005년 8월 맨체스터 유나이티드에 입단한 박지성을 시작으로 이영표, 설기현(전 레딩), 이동국(전 미들즈브러), 김두현(웨스트브로미치), 조원희(전 위건), 이청용(볼턴), 지동원(선덜랜드), 박주영(아스널)에 이어 열번째 한국인 프리미어리거가 된다.

스완지시티는 1912년 영국 웨일스 스완지를 연고로 창단됐으나 잉글랜드 축구리그에서 활약해온 팀이다.

2010-2011 시즌 2부리그 격인 챔피언십에서 승격돼 지난 시즌부터 프리미어리그 소속으로 돼 있으며 승격 첫 해 11위를 기록했다.

정밀한 패스로 점유율을 높이는 스페인식 축구를 구사하는 팀으로 현 사령탑인 미카엘 라우드럽(덴마크)도 현역 시절 바르셀로나와 레알 마드리드에서 뛴 스타 플레이어 출신이다.
