The U.S. cable news channel CNN carried a detailed report Tuesday on a South Korean singer's swimming journey to Dokdo, a set of islets in the East Sea at the center of a renewed diplomatic spat between Seoul and Tokyo.

CNN described Kim Jang-hoon's three-day project as "swimming into the diplomatic row" over Dokdo between the neighboring nations.

Along with dozens of college students and other amateur swimmers, Kim began a 55-hour, 230-kilometer relay swim from a southeastern port in South Korea. They are accompanied by a small flotilla of escort boats.

Dokdo, a largely uninhabited pair of volcanic outcroppings, is effectively controlled by South Korea but also claimed by Japan.

Kim's group is scheduled to arrive in Dokdo at around 2 p.m.

Wednesday, local time. That's when Korea marks the 67th anniversary of the liberation from 36 years of Japan's colonial rule.

Kim's campaign came as the Dokdo issue has drawn renewed public attention after President Lee Myung-bak's historic trip to the islets last week, a move strongly protested by the Japanese government.

CNN used Yonhap News Agency's report on Kim's comments shortly before jumping into the water.

"I will never make such a comment as 'Dokdo is our territory'

when I arrive there. It's meaningless to do so because they are undeniably our territory," Kim said.

미국 뉴스 전문 CNN 방송이 가수 김장훈의 독도 횡단 소식을 자세히 전했다.

CNN은 14일(한국시간) "한국의 유명 록 가수가 동해(the East Sea), 또는 일본해(Sea of Japan)에 있는 바위섬으로 헤엄쳐 외교적 분쟁(diplomatic row)으로 들어 갔다"고 표현했다.

독도 홍보 대사인 김장훈은 광복절을 기념해 배우 송일국, 성신여대 서경덕 교수, 피아밴드의 옥요한과 헐랭, 한국체육대 수영부 학생 등과 함께 경북 울진을 떠나 55시간 동안 릴레이로 헤엄쳐 15일 오후 2시 독도에 도착한다.

방송은 김장훈이 행사를 시작하기 전에 "독도에 가면 독도는 우리 땅이라는 표현은 하지 않겠다. 당연히 우리 땅이니까 그런 말은 무의미하다"고 말했다고 연합뉴스 보도를 인용해 소개했다.

또 이명박 대통령의 독도 방문 사실과 일본 측 대응을 다시 한 번 전하고 나서 일본이 오랫동안 이 섬이 자국 영토라고 강변하고 있지만 한국은 1945년 광복과 함께 모든 영토를 반환받았다고 말한다고 보도했다.

CNN은 별도 기사에서 독도 소유권에 대한 논쟁이 런던올림픽 축구에까지 옮겨가 일본의 요구로 국제올림픽위원회(IOC)가 '독도는 우리 땅' 이라는 문구가 적힌 종이 쪽지를 들고 승리를 자축한 한국 대표팀 박종우의 동메달 수여를 보류했다고 전했다.

국제축구연맹(FIFA)이 대한축구협회(KFA)에 사건을 자체 조사해 16일까지 결과를 제출하라고 했다는 FIFA 관계자의 발언도 소개했다.

이 관계자는 CNN에 "박종우의 행동이 의도적이지 않다는 점이 사진 판독으로 드러났다. 그는 피켓을 만들지 않았다"며 "사진을 보면 알겠지만 어떤 팬이 응원하면서 이 피켓을 들고 있었고 박이 그것을 건네받은 것"이라고 말했다.

CNN은 독도/다케시마는 이 지역의 몇몇 분쟁 섬 중 하나로 중국, 베트남, 필리핀, 말레이시아, 브루나이, 대만의 남중국해 주권 주장 등과 함께 아시아의 새 냉전 시대(new Cold War in Asia)를 초래할 우려도 있다고 덧붙였다.
