A French lake that transformed into a deep shade of red has surprised many tourists.

The color change is a natural phenomenon believed to stem from the salt crystals surrounding the lake in Camargue, southern France.

The sight was captured by a Russian photographer Sam Dobson, who stumbled across the scene by chance while driving through France.

“I’d read a lot of things about Camargue but I’d never heard anything about this,” he said.

Sam went on: “The salty crystals can be seen everywhere. Every small branch is covered with crystals, and with the red water as a background it looks like something extra-terrestrial.

“The strange thing is there are lakes on the left and on the right of this one and they are absolutely as you’d expect with normal water.

“I was just overwhelmed with emotions the whole time I was there. Despite my numerous travels, I have never seen anything like this before.”

'외계의 호수' 붉은 물이 흐르는 이유

최근 프랑스의 한 호수가 붉은 빛으로 변해 많은 관광객들을 놀라게 했다.

프랑스 서부의 카마르그(Camargue)에 위치한 이 호수를 지나던 러시아 출신 사진작가 샘 돕슨은 이 기이한 풍경을 사진으로 담았다. 그는 “카마르그에 대해 많은 책을 읽었지만 이런 현상에 대해선 전혀 들어본 적이 없다”고 말했다.

호수가 붉은 색으로 변한 것은 호수를 둘러싸고 있는 소금 결정체 (鹽晶 염정)에 의한 것으로 추정된다.

그는 또 “(호수의) 모든 곳이 염정 천지였다. 붉은 호수 주변의 나뭇가지들이 모두 소금 결정체들로 덮여있어 마치 외계처럼 보였다”며 “이상한 일은 이 호수를 중심으로 왼쪽과 오른쪽에 위치한 호수들은 모두 정상적이라는 것이다”라고 말했다.

돕슨은 “나는 그곳에 있는 내내 여러 가지 감정들로 뒤덮였었다. 많은 곳을 여행했지만 이런 광경은 처음이었다,”라며 촬영 당시의 상황을 설명했다.
