More than one in four doctorate degree recipients from Seoul National University (SNU) were unemployed last year, statistics showed Monday, the highest ratio in 10 years that indicates the country‘s most prestigious university is no exception to the tightening job market.

According to SNU’s annual statistics on employment and careers of graduates, out of 1,054 people who earned doctoral degrees from the school between August 2010 and February 2011, 289 or 27.4 percent were unemployed.

The unemployment rate for SNU doctoral recipients was only 15.4 percent in 2009 but has accelerated at a fast pace to reach the 25 percent mark in 2010, the report said.

Meanwhile, the employment rate for SNU doctorate graduates, excluding those who are drafted to two years of mandatory military service, has dipped from 87.9 percent in 2002 to 70.3 percent in 2011, the report added.

Among the doctoral degree holders, 23 percent of them pursued post-doctoral fellowships outside of the country, 15.9 percent found jobs at schools, 14.3 percent at corporations and 9.9 percent at domestic post-doctoral fellowships, it added.

According to a separate SNU survey, 20.2 percent of 252 people who received doctorate degrees in the same period said they are “undecided on their careers,” which is more than double the rate for people with master‘s degrees. (Yonhap News)

서울대학교의 연례 졸업생 취업현황 통계자료에 따르면 2010년 8월부터 2011년 2월까지 박사학위를 취득한 총 1,054명 가운데 27.4 퍼센트인 289명이 무직상태인 것으로 나타났다.

서울대 박사학위 취득자의 무직 비율은 2009년에는 15.4퍼센트 밖에 되지 않았으나 이후 빠른 속도로 증가하여 2010년에는 25퍼센트까지 증가했다고 통계보고는 전했다.

한편 서울대 박사학위 취득자의 취업율은 군입대자를 제외하고도 2011년 70.3퍼센트를 기록해 2002년의 87.9퍼센트에서 큰 폭으로 떨어진 모습을 보였다.

동일 기간을 대상으로 실시된 별도의 서울대 조사에 따르면 “진로를 결정하지 않았다”라고 응답한 사람의 비율이 전체의 20.2퍼센트를 기록해 석사학위 취득자의 두 배에 달하는 수치를 보였다. (코리아헤럴드)
