China‘s most influential newspaper on Thursday hit back against doping suspicions levelled at gold medal winning swimmer Ye Shiwen, accusing Western media of “deeply ingrained prejudice”.

Ye Shiwen, 16, captured the women’s 400m individual medley title in a world record time, swimming faster than Men‘s champion Ryan Lochte in the final stage of the race.

But her victory was marred by suspicions of doping after the head of the World Swimming Coaches Association said the achievement was “impossible”.

The People’s Daily Newspaper -- the mouthpiece of China‘s ruling Communist Party -- dismissed suspicions about Ye’s performance as part of a campaign to discredit China‘s sporting progress.

“Deeply ingrained prejudices lead some Western media into blind ignorance,” the paper said.

“Attempts to discredit Chinese athletes are a miscalculation which will not affect the morale of Chinese athletes.

”China’s sporting progress is the result of Chinese efforts, and ungrounded statements won‘t damage China’s image, or obstruct the progress of Chinese sport,“ the paper said.

Chinese web users have also blasted Western media for raising suspicions over Ye, who won a second Olympic gold in the 200m medley on Tuesday.

”Well done, Ye Shiwen,“ posted one under the name Lookingatearthfromafar, ”the West‘s suspicion is inevitable. I agree Westerners are always arrogant.“

China’s anti-doping chief Jiang Zhixue said in London on Monday that the country‘s swimmers had undergone nearly 100 drug tests since they arrived in Britain for the Olympics.

”I think it is not proper to single Chinese swimmers out once they produce good results. Some people are just biased,“ he said. (AFP)

中, 예스원 도핑의혹 “서방의 편견일뿐”


중국 일간지 인민일보가 지난 목요일 자국의 올림픽 수영 금메달리스트 예스원을 향한 도핑의혹에 대해 “뼛속까지 찌든 서방의 편견이다”라고 강도 높게 비판했다.

예스원(16) 선수는 런던올림픽 여자 400m 개인혼영 부문에서 남성부문 1위인 라이언 록티보다도 더 빠른 세계신기록을 달성했다.

그러나 이러한 대기록은 미국수영코치협회에서 “현실적으로 불가능한 기록”이라며 예 선수의 도핑의혹을 제기함에 따라 논란에 휩싸였다.

중국 공산당을 대변하는 인민일보는 예스원 선수의 기록에 대한 의혹에 대해 중국의 스포츠 발전을 폄하하려는 행위라고 비판했다.

인민일보는 보도를 통해 “이처럼 깊게 뿌리 박힌 편견이 일부 서방 언론을 무지의 상태로 몰아넣었다”고 밝혔다.

또한 이 보도는 “중국의 스포츠 발전은 중국 인민 전체 노력의 산물이며 그와 같은 근거 없는 발언으로는 중국의 이미지에 해를 가할 수 없다”고 덧붙였다.
